The single best defense is to ensure you're computer is patched and up to date with the current updates. I can't emphasize that enough.

Get anti-virus software if it will make you feel better, but if you patch your boxes that will go the longest way. As soon as a security patch comes out, get it loaded.

I have a government customer that spends more than 30 grand a year on multiple layers of protection, client, server and network.

Didn't save them when a user opened a FedEx scam email sent to a personal account. Took less than three hours for ransomware to scramble 20TB worth of data.

Luckily the attack didn't go after desktops or remote offices. Disaster recovery had production restored the next afternoon.

Concur ! (I ran Free AVG for many years, but have switched to Defender. No issues.

Yes, what GordonThree stated helps prevent being infected with computer viruses, but doesn't guarantee you won't be hit.
It just cuts down the odds.

For once Gordon is correct. Sensible surfing and a good front end works.

All that Fed-Ex **** goes right to spam. If it look suspicious, it is.

Best computer security is common sense.

I've been cleaning up people's messes for a long time. It doesn't matter how much they spent on protection, their lack of care on the Internet has always lead to a compromised computer.

Most compromise come from users looking for free pornography, movies and music.

Next most popular compromise is surfing the Internet while being deathly afraid of being compromised. These users click on every banner ad and fake error pop up warning them their computer is as risk and should be scanned immediately.

How do you avoid these pitfalls? It's easy: pay for your entertainment, whatever that might be and use an ad blocker to keep the scanner scams to a minimum.

Malwarebytes is popular - I use in combo with Windows Defender - both free and they don't eat memory. I have tried many over the years - unfortunately paying for protection doesn't necessarily give you better results - some like McAfee are difficult to remove once installed.

Free is never the best. Pay a few dollars and get Norton or WebRoot. The Windows 10 forced updates do a pretty good job, but not enough.
