Does closing the laptop disconnect from wifi?

The manager here in our park has requested that we manually disconnect from the wifi each time we're finished using it. They contend that just closing the laptop leaves it connected to the wifi and continues to use band width. True or false?

Oh for cripes sake... my point isn't to disconnect in the middle of something. Just like my phone hotspot.. it'll turn off after about 15 minutes of non-activity.

If you're on battery power, and you LT goes into sleep mode, it should disconnect the WiFi to conserve power.

As others have said... It depends on your settings. I have multiple monitors plugged into my laptop so the lid is always "almost closed". When the cat walks on it and closes it all of my encrypted work sessions go away and if I am on my google voice phone it drops because my wifi turns off.

But thanks for asking this question. I just changed my power settings so when it is plugged in and the lid closes nothing happens. Dave 1 - Cat 0 (this time).

If your laptop goes to sleep when you close it, it will NOT use bandwidth.

It DOES NOT here with my setups... I very seldom OPEN the laptop hehe... It is sitting in a docking station and I have all the monitors, keyboard, Sound speakers, etc all located on my desk setup.

When we go camping I just pull the LAPTOP from the docking station and plop it in a similar docking station setup in my trailer and continue on.

Got to LOG OFF to disconnect from things here...

We quit messing with the camp grounds along time back using their free WIFI Hot Spots etc... Too many users all on at the same time and of course they have to have all their rules to try it make it usable for everyone... I'm sure it has gotten better over the years. We bring our own secured WIFI Hot SPOT with us using Verizon MIFI. This serves all of our tablets and computers we bring with us. Does not tie up our CELL PHONE service...

When you close the laptop, it does not disconnect.

You can consume bandwidth while not actively engaging the internet. Examples would be windows updates while idle, etc.

true laptop will download updates and ping looking for new email while you are away. best to just shut off the pc when using limited bandwidth.

I guess it depends on your laptop settings. Mine is set to "sleep" when the lid goes down, and it does disconnect the wifi. I suspect "hibernate" would do the same. However, our Android tablets do stay connected to wifi when asleep, and it takes a power down (or set to "airplane" mode) to actually shut down the wifi.

In Windows 8 (and probably other versions as well), go to Control Panel, then Power Settings, and there should be a menu option on the left to "choose what closing the lid does" or some such. One of the options on mine is to "shut down".

Personally, I think the park manager is probably wrong, but it's his park and he makes the rules.

Possibly true. But it can depend on what you have the laptop set to do when you close the lid. Some are set to "Sleep" when the top is closed.

It depends on your power settings. They can be configured to go to sleep when closing the lid, or do nothing when closing. So check Control Panel > Power Settings to be sure.
