Does closing the laptop disconnect from wifi?

The manager here in our park has requested that we manually disconnect from the wifi each time we're finished using it. They contend that just closing the laptop leaves it connected to the wifi and continues to use band width. True or false?

True:

Manufactures are different. Most have a little button.

I have exposed to many a person a small slider button on the front edge of a laptop.

Then I would say - "invoice will be in the mail". ๐Ÿ˜‰

My laptop always drops wifi, when operating on battery. There is a preference setting, drop or not drop, when asleep on plugged in.

When the laptop goes to sleep, I know it drops wifi because I can see it reconnect. (Or, if I access the internet too quickly, there is an "no internet" error message.)

As a result of this thread, I took a look at out router. Whether I let the laptop go to sleep, or manual disconnect from wifi, the router shows the IP address is still in use. Only when I "release" the IP address, does the router show the IP address is not in use.

One problem with Win 8 and 8.1 is that there seems to be no way to completely shut off updates as there was in Win 7 and earlier and whenever Microsoft decides to send out updates they get downloaded and installed - and these could use up bandwidth.

Depends on the OS and you power settings.
Also
W8 does not cut off anything.
It goes into sleep mode.

Maybe you could talk to the manager about plugging the route into a timer to turn off at something like 2:00 am and back on at 2:15 am. This way he can also publish the times and you won't be in the middle of something important.

Thanks for the responses. I checked my settings and the laptop is set to "sleep" when the lid is closed, whether on battery or plugged in. The manager has, on occasion, shut the wifi off and then back on the first thing in the morning to clear the system. That's really inconvenient when you're on-line at the time. We're in a park for the winter so we really have no choice but to use the park's wifi most of the time, though we do use our phones as a hot spot when we do anything like banking, credit cards, etc. for a secure connection.

Or just hit the wifi button and turn it off.

I wouldn't go near AOL, not that it has anything to do with what we're talking about.

That's great until YOU get disconnected in the middle of something important.
Oh for cripes sake... my point isn't to disconnect in the middle of something. Just like my phone hotspot.. it'll turn off after about 15 minutes of non-activity.

Welcome back.

2oldman..

I guess YOU have never experienced AOL dialup back in the day?

You would often get disconnected due to high traffic after 2 PM to midnight.. Would often take several hrs an evening to connect long enough to read one email with text only.. Emails with pictures.. never happened.. and surfing the net was a luxury if you managed to get 10 minutes without the dreaded "goodbye" disconnect sound :S

Folks, just turn off the PC when done.

Win7 and Win8 boot fast from cold start so there is ZERO reasons to leave it on all the time..

Additionally when the PC is on it is continually polling for software updates which creates a lot of unneeded network traffic.

WiFi by its nature IS a "limited" resource, please be kind to other campers and not hog it.

I'll just repeat the answer like the others do here.

It depends on your settings, it shouldn't use wifi when shut.

Depending on the laptop and power settings

Yes
no
perhaps

I would go with NO for the most common settings.
Turning it OFF, Completly OFF, is the only way to be sure.

In the case of Windows 8.1 that means restart it to make sure everything is closed, then when you get the log in screen, sit on the power button till it goes dark.

You've gotten several correct answers. YOU have complete control of what closing the lid does. By default, Microsoft sets windows to go to sleep when you close the lid or hit the power button, which should suspend any activities like that. The control options are very granular on most systems. You can select weather video, usb, network, etc stay active. Do yourself and your laptop battery a favor and set it to shut it down.
