Foxfi and PDAnet stopped working. Is it Samsung, or ATT?

Full unlocked version of Foxfi has worked all last year, and I didn't try using it this year until a few months ago. It no longer works, even though I can enable it via the check box. I know there has been some sort of 4.x update; don't know if that was Samsung or AT&T wireless provider).

The phone is a Galaxy S3; AT&T Old Nation plan with rollover minutes, and 2gb data. When I was able to use Foxfi on trips, I never came close to running over the 2gb, but I suppose even if I did, ATT would be pleased, as I would have been billed for the overage.

Read something about AT&T setting a flag in the phone op-sys, to prevent wifi hotspot and tethering, but 'rooting' can return the phone to "native" wifi, whatever that means.

But I also read that the prob is the software update, and I am wondering if I can roll back to the previous version? Someone said to buy a mifi from ebay, and plug my sim-card into it when I want wifi. Anyone know if this works?

Oh, one more thing; AT&T will not let me have their wifi hotspot option unless I get on a 5bg data plan, which is another $30/mo. I don't need all that.

MrWiz... thanks for your question. Yes, I did in fact download and install PCDnet a few days ago, from the goog play store. The install went without a hitch, until it came time to connect. At that time, I got the same att message to contact 611 customer service, and the app terminated. It then uninstalled the laptop side of the app, and closed.

I have only tried it once this evening, after downloading the laptop side, with tether connected. It finished, loaded, and connected perfectly, and the speed was good, as various website pages loaded quickly.

Glad you got the USB tether working

I reread your OP, don't see anything that says you tried to use USB tether first time, Not saying you didn't try
Only saying the only tether is mentioned about AT&T setting a flag against it.
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

Downloaded PDAnet again, this time directly on the laptop via a home internet connection. Then I switched off home FIOS, and tried connecting the laptop via tether, and it worked! Tried Foxfi again, and no wifi to be found, but at least we can get something on-line while traveling.

Will continue searching for a solution to the wifi app failing. Thanks to all for your help.

I just installed pda.net on my LG Escape, running on Consumer Cellular/AT&T. Both the Hot Spot and USB tethering work.
I suspect you have a software issue.

You may want to confirm that your plan is still worth keeping. AT&T has gone to completely new pricing and they switched us over only 9 months into our 2 year contract. We were contacting them to up our data to 6 gig from 4. Good thing we needed more data because they gave us 10 gig instead of 6, unlimited voice and text, wireless hot spot using my Galaxy, and cut the monthly cost of our plan by 25%. They are responding to the competition so it may be worth a phone call to see how your current plan stacks up. They will compare it to their new offers and let you know.

As I mentioned in my OP, I also tried tethering with PDAnet, and the same message to contct AT&T cust serv, is displayed, and PDAnet turns off.

Steve, when I go to google play store and look for FoxFi apps, it shows that they are already installed; both the app, and the add-on. When I click on them (on google play), the only option is to OPEN.

Is there another way to do a FoxFi update?

So far, everyone that;s still using Foxfi has been on Verizon, and I am thinking ATT has pulled the plug on me. I am not under contract with them, so I may make some changes.

I have a galaxy s3/Verizon and use foxfi. Recently I did an android update to KitKat and my foxfi stopped working. I had to update foxfi through the Google store. Now it works fine.

I just downloaded pda.net+ which I believe includes Foxfi because it's on my phone as well. It's working just fine on Verizon. Maybe it's an old software issue or ATT issue.

you can try pdanet which now owns foxfi

with pdanet you actually tether the phone to the PC using the USb charge cable

in fact, look in foxfi it might have USB tether option in the menu
I can explain it to you.

Thanks; I'll try that. My version is 2.13.1, and the WiFi Mode addon is v3011, as shown at the top of the screen, when I load the app.

OK, I just checked, and there is no later versions than the one I have. I also downloaded 3 other wifi hotspot apps, and get the same AT&T message that I don't have hotspot capability, and to contact AT&T customer service.

Looks like they are blocking me from using my paid-for data plan on anything but the phone screen. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Did you try updating FoxFi through Google play store

Or by going to http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=FoxFi&sort=relevancy

At AppBrain.com

It was most likely the system update
You need the latest version of FoxFi

My Samsung galaxy nexus has android 4.2.2
And FoxFi works for me, on Verizon
I can explain it to you.
