How is GMail working now? Or have you learned Portuguese well enough to read your email? :B
I'd check the location of your VPN server to find out if it's located in Portugal? As some have mentioned, it could be that GMail is setting the default language to where it detects the location of the VPN?
Out of curiosity, the next time your GMail is in Portuguese, go check the location of your VPN IP at WhatIsMyIP.com.
You can also change your GMail language from settings.

Hi Ed! Good on you for using Proton VPN. I have used their email since they were in beta and love their privacy policy. Do you use them for mail too?
As to VPN usage, does Proton VPN allow you to force select your country you are routing thru? That could fix any language/measurement unit problems that arise (if your prob is indeed caused by that). I use Nord VPN and often country-surf just for the heck of it.
I am just going by stated policy re Google, Facebook, and the rest who actually come out and say that they harvest and sell private info. I have no prob with anyone who wants to do that, just that everyone knows what they are doing. Someone once said that if you cant figure out who is paying for a service, then the answer is that You Are. Google/FB/et al get a lot of money selling targeted advertising.

Agree with all re de-googleing (and de-Anythinging that sells your personal data. all you gmailers are aware that google reads and harvests info in all your gmails, right?).

If I'm in Portugal, why is everyone around me speaking English? :B
I visited Spain and Portugal many years ago, but wasn't online at that time. ๐
Anyhow, problem has resolved for now. If it persists, I'll take further action. I wonder if there's a way to "re-install" a Gmail account without losing my current address?
