Sorry to hijack here but it kinda goes along with this.

I have been thinking about adding a hard drive to my tailgater. I alrerady have the Hopper and Joey system at home and added the tailgater on to my home plan. Does this mean that all I have to do is buy the HD and it will work or am I going to have to pay extra fees to active the DVR feater on the 211 as well?

I've been using a cheap 500 gb drive that I got at Walmart (Toshiba) that is USB powered with my VIP 211Z. Never had an issue with it being short of power with just that provided by the VIP 211 via the USB cable. I bought the drive on sale and IIRC, it cost almost as much to get Dish to "turn on" the DVR feature as I paid for the drive. That was 2 years ago...
My 2 cents, your mileage may vary...

Yep, that IS what I suggested at my first post..

However, Folks DO need to be aware that SSD drives REQUIRE MUCH MORE CURRENT.

Typically a 500 gig laptop spinning platter drive will need just under 500 ma.

If you decide to use a SSD drive the requirements is ALMOST TWO AMPS..

Some 2.5" HD cases do have a split USB cord, with those you can use an external 5V USB power supply/charger to make up for the extra current draw..

SMALL laptop drives such as what is in the one you linked MAY or MAY NOT WORK. It all depends on how much POWER the hd requires.. Typically the larger the drive size it the more power the port will need to supply.

VIP USB port is NOT DESIGNED for full 500 ma devices.. Using devices with no external power supply is a hit or miss thing..

A lot of the "USB3" external HDs are no longer coming with external power supplies. Instead they are depending on the USB3 port to supply the power (USB3 spec allows up to 3A at 5V) OR in some cases may have a "Y" cable with 2 USB plugs on the PC side in order to make them "compatible" with USB2 and lower power specs..

Looks like the 1 TB My Book does have an external power supply..

BUT, looks like that is a USED or "REFURBISHED" drive..

AVAILABLE HERE

Finding external drives less than 2 TB that HAVE an external power supply are getting pretty hard to find..

To get external HDs with less than 2 TB you are getting limited to 2.5" laptop drive size.. And most of those use the port to power the drive.

Buy an external USB Hard drive CASE for 3.5" desktop PCs.

LIKE THIS

Which WILL have a separate power supply.

Then add in ANY SATA drive you want (2.5" or 3.5" size) to the enclosure.

Alternately you can get 2.5" external HD cases for SATA drives which have a "split" USB cable. This cable has two USB connectors on the PC end..

The extra connector is designed to pull additional power from a second USB port on the PC.. With this design you could also use a spare USB charger to plug the second cable into.

By the way, you don't "need" USB3" for use with the VIP, it doesn't support USB3 speeds.. VIP also does not supply much current, I suspect less than a PC would.

USB3 ports can supply up to 3A at 5V compared to USB2 and lower at 500 ma (half amp) which is why you are not seeing much in external HDs that use a separate power supply..

Here are a bunch of them. Scroll down to about $100 and look for EXTERNAL.

They can be ordered on-line.

Dish network only recommends Usb 2.0 to add dvr capability which are very hard to find these days. This video describes how it is possible to use usb 3.0 as an external hard drive by adding a usb powered hub.
