Hot spot and data drain

Do any of you have a sense as to how much data I might burn if using a tv with a Roku stick, signing in with my cable subscriber and feeding it with ny WiFi hotspot.

Iโ€™m wondering how much data will get used for appx every hour of tv. The hotspot does not have unlimited data so I want to be mindful of burn rates.

X2. I've found those rates generally accurate. Streaming high res content on a limited data hotspot is not a good idea if you pay block rates for excess data. It ads up fast.

2g wouldn't even work for this website.. let alone streaming. You mean 2 gig?

Also on my computer, I have one browser that is full up cadilac.
Then another browser that is really stripped down to like just pictures and text so I can browse the news and such. If I come upon a website that doesnt work, I just pull up the cadilac and paste the website in there and do what I want.

This has probably been said, but...

Go to your computer and maybe also your phones settings. You can define that connection as "metered". This tells the device that you are paying for every bit and byte. Your computer will take it easy on you. It also wont do big updates while you are not looking, etc.

2G? Is that still even a thing? Did a 2g hotspot actually exist "way back then"?
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.

He's using the ROKU to stream his home cable channels in a remote location...

Exactly...

When you are surfing Facebook and similar sites you can have videos that start and stream automatically. If you see and interesting topic you might click to the You Tube video associated with that topic. If you have a Win 10 computer and don't block updates or if you send and receive photos in your e-mails you can use up a lot of data. You are an IT person.....get with it!
You mention that 3GB on your phone is plenty. I could not get through 1/2 a month on 3GB. That's why there is a seat for every butt. You just have to understand what you want and what you need and find a plan that works for you.

Maybe the Roku website will tell OP how much data he burns.

I asked about the cable thing because it sounded like he was at home and home cable usually doesn't care how much data you burn. So this 'cable subscriber' is a mobile data link? Like a Verizon phone?

My phone plan has unlimited data, but limited Hot Spot. It's not unusual for me over a period of a week to blow throw 25G of hot spot data. Sooooo, my smart TV hooks to my phone and I use data to my hearts content, streaming through my phone.

a lot of parks have some limited internet, and usually a weak signal. i made a repeater for a friend of mine, and it seemed to work good for him. Since my park now has internet, I might have to make one for myself.

Verizon has just come out (last week) with some newly-structured prepaid plans that includes one with unlimited data (truly unlimited - not throttled past a certain point) for MiFi hot-spots. We just switched our MiFi and and two phones over from a post-paid plan, got unlimited data on the MiFi (3GB/month on each phone which is MORE than enough for us) and cut our monthly bill in half. We use an Amazon Fire Stick TV device and are now streaming from the above sources plus YouTube, etc., without worrying about data usage.

Spectrum has hotspots in areas around the nation. You can sign into one of those hotspots using your cable subscription logins. I've never tried it.

On our recent 11 week road trip, we used about 40 gig a month just web surfing and e-mailing. Blew through the FMCA Verizon 25 gig limit in 20 days. We even got some decent park WiFi every once in a while.
