Modem activity light flashing very fast all the time

Here is info on my computer, Gateway w/ first generation i5 processor, 4 gig ram, 64 bit, Win 7 Home Premium, IE, Yahoo home page, ISP is dslextreme.com and previously using AVG Free.

Awhile ago I noticed my modem activity light was flashing so fast it looked like it was on steady. It was doing this whether or not I was on line.

I called technical service at dslextreme and had an open trouble ticket and the rep and I tried a half dozen fixes, none worked. He felt it was something infecting the computer and suggested I get some other virus protection instead of AVG Free. I had read on here about AdAware and downloaded the free version. Ran a full scan, two hours. Problem solved.

I noticed two days ago that the activity light was on again. AdAware had expired because I hadn't registered it. Decided to buy the full package for sale price of $18.00. Got it downloaded yesterday and ran it last night. The first scan was automatic and it was the FAST scan. Found a half dozen things it didn't like and deleted them automatically. Light still rapidly flashing. Ran FULL scan, another two hours. Only new thing found was a cookie from Oneclick. Deleted Oneclick cookie and no more light.

Any ideas what Oneclick is?

There are several computers on my wireless system, this is my wife's computer. None of the others are infected.

The activity light came on with the computer and other peripherals and never stopped, I ran a full scan with AdAware and it stopped for awhile, then it started again. I paid the $18 for full version of AdAware and it automatically ran a quick scan. That turned up a lot of tracking cookies. Just for kicks I ran a full scan and it turned up the tracking cookie from OneClick. Got rid of all of them and it's fine again. Just ran AdAware on my travel netbook and it turned up a tracking cooking for DoubleClick.

The net book was running very slow, sort of like a dial up modem and now with all the bad stuff removed is pretty speedy. If it happens again I'll report back

Do you notice this activity when your browser is running? If so, does it stop when you close your browser?

Also, do you have the free version of Malwarebytes installed? If so, run a full scan.

On a guess I would say some kind of tracking cookie.. But a cookie should not do that, I suspect something else.

Frankly: I am very offended by the companies that do this kind of thing. They are Felons after all, one and all they are Felons, (It is a felony in at least one state to install software on your computer without your permission, thus they are felons)

Start > Run > msconfig

Goto startup options, disable anything not needed. Restart computer. Click OK on the new popup box.

Norton used to have a free tool to scan your computer on their home page. Unknown if it's still available. It's going to take multiple scans from various known companies to sanitize this computer. Do Not allow anything from this computer to touch other computers (memory stick). Do Not allow wife to infect other computers. Games, background downloads, Freemium downloads.
