New Email Client

I am looking for a new email client to replace WLM. I am using Windows 7. I hope U can get some recommendations. I don't want to use web maul and I don't want to use Outlook. I am not a power user. I loved WLM. I am presently trying OE Classic. Anyone who used Outlook Express will feel at home. But it does have some problems. You cannot set it to be the default email client. So if you are on a web site and click on "contact" it opens up WLM. OE Classic told me that they will one day make that change. You also have to change your outlook settings to POP. This causes havoc. If I open Outlook on my Android phone it is empty. Cannot change font size of your inbox list. Other quirks as well. I am considering runasxp. It too is built on the old OE but much has been updated. Some have suggested Thunderbird. But I really don't want to fool around customizing. I want something that works out of the box. All suggestions appreciated.

For one thing you have access to your contacts without an internet connection.

I guess it depends on what you want from your mail service. For example, I don't need to have the mailman standing at my door handing my mail to me in order to read it. He can drop it off, leave, and then I can read it at my leisure without him standing on my front step. Or I can keep it around where I can refer to it when he isn't at my door to hand it to me.

Do we require connectivity to send and receive email? Certainly. Do PC-based clients offer services beyond the send/receive function that are desirable when no connection is available? Yes they do. Does everyone need those services. Definitely not.

I use both kinds. Gmail for my personal and Outlook for work. I still file things on Gmail but nothing so important that I might need access when the Internet isn't available. My work is different because there are many times I don't want to connect to the VPN (which allows my Outlook to connect to the Exchange server) because then people will know I am "available". In these cases I often use the mail I have filed away in my local Outlook folders.

I prefer a PC-based client because the mail will download all by itself. If I'm on a terrible, slow connection all I need to do is wait until it's there to read it at my own speed.

With a web client, simply navigating between the messages can be painful on a slow connection.

Yes Dave, I know that; I've been doing Email since the time when you used a dialup modem to connect to the server.

Given that most people don't have access to any "other kind of network", for most of us not having Internet connectivity means not having any connectivity at all.

While your post is technically correct and some might find it informative, it has little to no practical value in the current discussion. As a practical matter, both types of email systems require Internet CONNECTIVITY to work.

A "web-based" client such as Gmail is one where your web browser interprets code sent from the server and presents you with the screen and with the data, in this case your email messages. These web-based clients only work with an Internet connection.

A PC-based client such as Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. is an application program that runs on your PC generally without the aid of your browser (although it could use your browser). The PC-based client sends requests to the server that result in sending and receiving emails, but not the screens that display them. These clients allow you to store copies of your email in local folders on your PC that are accessible when you are not connected to the Internet.

The email protocol does not actually require the Internet to work, messages may be created and sent over many types of networks using the same transport protocols used over the Internet.

Outlook is great for heavy users. I used when I had a business. I don't have a current copy of Outlook and I would need 3. So far Thunderbird is working well. Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you use the filing capabilities of the client you might. I often don't bother to connect into my work VPN when I simply need to reference something in my Outlook folders.

I recommend OUTLOOK .... It has in one form or another been around since the stone age and will until armageddon and probably won't just disappear or be "gobbled up" in the internet take over wars. After all it's just e-mail so like anything else there will be quirks and maybe some learning involved, but that's the norm in the ever changing tech war battleground now days.

THIS is the part that I don't understand.

If you really have "no service", nothing will work.....not a POP client, not an IMAP client.....NOTHING.

I have been doing some research since I started this thread. I do not like Outlook.com. I did not want a web based program as I am often in an area with no service. Outlook 20216 is expensive for 3 computers. I found a program called OE Classic. A reworked Outlook Express that will work on Windows 10 and down! It was like visiting an old friend. Seemed to work well but was slow. Then I discovered that by changing Outlook.com to Pop mail( does not work otherwise) OE would delete all of your mail in any program you are running on another computer. Actually the mail is still there but it is moved into a POP folder. I gave up and downloaded runasxp. Another Outlook Express. This will work with POP but leaves your mail in other email programs in the inbox. The fellow who sells it (donation) really tries to help his clients. However I had a problem with a conflict between his program and something in my computer. He tried very hard and when the problem could not be fixed he refunded my donation without my asking. Nice gesture. Next I loaded Thunderbird. So far I am very happy. Just a matter of getting used to a new screen! Like others I hate MS for screwing up WLM!!!!
