RV GPS

Hello everyone,

I am looking to get a GPS that I can program for trailer Weight, Height, Length etc.

I was thinking about getting the "Garmin RV 770 NA LMT-S RV". But would like to hear your thoughts.

Specifically about this one or similar units you have used.

What did you like about it(them) or dislike? Why?

Thanks for the input

In Thunder Bay ON, both my Garmin and the all mighty Google tried to route me over a railroad bridge. I imagine someone at the city or county level must have a good laugh telling the map data companies that the rail bridge is open for automotive traffic. Even shows as a road online, but it's certainly not.

I'm curious if you have a setting selected improperly. Maybe that is why it is doing what it is.
I'll check to see if it's set to 'boat.'

Bought the 770LMT-S while on the road a few months ago. Had it over nighted to the campground we were at in Lubec Maine. Up and using in no time. Very user friendly. Don't know how I have gone with out it now that I use it.

I have the Garmin RV760LMT with up to date maps. All I have to do is turn it on and it will get me lost. I never really trust it now. I use a trucker's atlas to plan my route and use the GPS to look ahead for diesel, food, etc. My phone has a better map program. The last time I was on I40 going through Oklahoma City it kept telling me I had to exit as there was a low clearance ahead (I'm under 12 feet high). I noticed the 18 wheelers were not exiting so I decided to take a chance but the Garmin kept telling me to exit. It even got to a point where it had a screen pop up that made me hit a button to confirm that I was ignoring the Garmin directions. Made it all the way to New Mexico and never saw a low bridge. It has done similar mis-directions many times but this was the craziest. I still use it when on the interstates to look for services at upcoming exits. My guess is if you program it to go to Alaska you'll probably find yourself heading south into Florida as it takes you around the world to Alaska. When I want to get lost I program the Garmin to head to Dallas, Texas so I can find all the dirt roads on the way. I never trust it any more but use the trucker's atlas and it has never been wrong. The Garmin was wrong many, many times. Can you tell I really donโ€™t trust the Garmin?

Amazon has a lot of questions answered about this unit.

What is the "truckers map"?

X1, large screen and voice command make it RV friendly.

I have the Garmin 760. It's like anything. Just a tool. Like GordonThree stated above, it's not perfect. Many times, I've known for a fact roads are RV friendly but the Garmin would rather send me 50 miles out of my way to make sure I stay on a major highway. Use a GPS unit as one tool to go along with other research and they are helpful but not the best thing since sliced bread by any means.

I do not trust any 1 GPS, but I was hoping that the Garmin 770 RV would at least maybe give me a little more warning if I am approaching a "low bridge".

Another question I have is:

When using the Garmin 770 RV, if you just have the unit on, and do NOT have a destination programmed, but have your RV height set, will the GPS notify you of a low bridge?

Or does it have to be programmed for a specific route before it will identify low bridges? If that makes sense.

Ryan

When driving without a route programmed, I still get warnings about steep grades, sharp curves, sudden speed limit changes, school zones, speed traps, etc.

My 760's favorite answer is "RV Accessibility Unknown" ... kind of a general disclaimer. My height is under 10 feet, so I haven't seen any height warnings. Tried searching on the subject? The subject seems to come up frequently, rants about various brand GPS misleading folks on bridge heights.
