Hubby and I, both retired are excited to purchase our first MH soon. We've been looking at TT's, 5th wheels and MH's for over a year. We've decided a motorhome is for us, but now comes the hardest part....which one? We continue to find ourselves drawn to the Phaeton, but have heard some concerns about customer service declining.

Then there's the Entegra line which is the other one we like. Both have our favorite floor plan, etc. but chassis's are different. Spartan or Freightliner? How's a newbie to know. I feel like I'm over thinking this at times...,but it's a big investment for us.

Salespeople really aren't all that helpful, as their MH is best. I found this site and thought " ah ha!" Opinions galore, but not profit driven! We read and read, but would appreciate your experiences if you have the time to share.

So...Tiffin, Entegra, or Fleetwood ( or other recommendations for 40 footers). Please share your thoughts.
Thanks you:)

I've had my 2008 Born Free for the past 15 months. It hasn't leaked a drop since new.
It has a 1 piece fiberglass roof and a no seam front cap which helps.
Construction methods and quality materials will limit failures. By the way I did have a 2004 Hurricane Class A which had a few leaks the 1st year I owned it.

Renting first is a great idea (Though I am not sure if you can rent a Class A). I bought 2006 Gulf Stream SuperC last year. Went cross country to Allentown, PA - Yosemite, CA and back in June. While the trip was incredible since we did it together. Driving a class C on a long trip SUCKED!.
So please drive and experience whatever you are thinking of buying. Brand selection can follow.

We love our Newmar Ventana. Can't say enough great things about Newmar. We bought a 2006 Newmar Ventana with 7,000 miles on it in January. It is awesome!

We love our Dynamax 35 footer 350SL . When I was looking I knew I wanted something that I could take care of myself and would fit in the driveway . My wife and I bought what we needed not what the kids thought we needed . I can clean my RV inside and out in four hours and thats wash ,clean and wax the wheels ,vacuum , bathroom etc. I hate seeing a RV dirty going down the highway .
I think like someone said rent one first.

Best of luck your going to love it.

One has to decide if they are a camper or a traveler.
A class A or even a large class C would not be right for us.

Too much time spent on the small back roads, turning around to go back to yard sales etc.

Except while in our Florida fiver, we seldom spend two nights in the same place.

Too each his own!

Hi Bumpy,
I'm curious as to how many Class Cs you've owned and which manufacturers?

you don't have to own anything to read reports in this forum.
yes I considered a C when I first bought a motorhome. reading convinced me otherwise. It's amazing what one can learn by reading and keeping an open mind.

Newmar is a very stable company and one of few that has not gone bankrupt or sold out. Good luck in your search!

Yeah That…… my questions always get an answer by just calling their support people.

1 cut a corner too short at a gas pump dented a basement door, 1 called, the door was at our house when we got home from the trip, painted to match.

2 Lost our big awning, one call the right awning was in shipment that day, color to match with the right arms and attaching hardware.

3 popped a fuse to the rear clearance lights and turn signals, called tech support and they looked up my VIN and told me where the fuse was located.

Spartan chassis. what can I say? bullet proof. well maybe not, but close and well supported

Our Newmar has been great coach, we bought it used from a local couple, after 9 years in storage it had the typical wake up problems, 6 new tires first, and a few other rubber stuff like the sewer hoses, water supply hose, were dry rotted but they all were easy
fixes that most handy men can do.

CBS this morning, The CEO of Winnebago stated they are sold out for the summer. Selling 155 new one a week.

Interesting. I have my 2011 Winnebago for sale and I have been getting calls from dealers offering to buy or consign my moho. As a matter of fact, one called about two hours ago.

Since you have had a boat I'd not rule out a class C. Much cheaper to maintain. Less storage of course.

and the overhead either has leaked, is leaking, or will leak. take your pick.

Here's a suggestion you haven't heard before. Buy a used rig from a fireman. Yes a FIREMAN. They are fanatics about their equipment, and they are all experts in either plumbing, electric, engines, tool & die, or some other mechanical trade. Really. These guys are nuts for maintenance and take pride in how perfect their possessions are.

Go to a local firehouse and just ask if anyone there owns a motorhome, and are they thinking of selling, or do they know someone who's selling? I bought my first one and by chance it was owned by an asst Chief who was moving up to a really big one. It was 18 years old and looked, drove and worked like it was 18 months! Good luck!

Hi Bumpy,

Interesting stats. Compiled by whom? LOL leaks are inevitable I suspect--no matter the type of RV

I forget the exact source, but I am positive it was posted by a French Model. 🙂
