How Far Can We Go?

Before I got reliable numbers on our new toy I was worried about running to Empty. I even stopped for $20 of Diesel when I was only 20 miles from home and I still had 2 bars out of 10 on the fuel gage.

So I worked up a spreadsheet based on the fuel mileages I thought I could expect and the capacity of the tank per manufacture. I then came up with this graph. I can see by my odometer how many miles from fillup and per my fuel gage estimate miles left until empty.

I try to drive ALL my vehicles for max fuel mileage. That means I accelerate slowly, keep max speed down, etc. I generally know just how far my destination is on any given day.

My first drives got up to 75 mph while learning the machine. I now keep it below 65 mph, and I observe that my current mpg is up from 12 to 15.

I would keep to the extreme right-hand lane except for those areas where the pavement is in really bad condition. Also for years I have tried to be very courteous to the truckers. In general I consider them to be very experienced and professional.

Its so variable that we don't screw around and we have a pretty huge range. I consider 1/2 a tank to be "lets find out where the next truck stop is" and 1/3 to be "I need Diesel NOW".

I don't ever want to be in a situation of needing to shoe horn the rig in some tiny podunk station and take a chance on bad fuel.

I've never really worried about the 'miles' as mpg can change due to headwinds, terrain, traffic etc.

So when fuel gauge gets to 1/2 tank I look for fuel and fill up.
Gives me plenty of leeway to find fuel.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

I just do it the hard way.
I can go about 700 miles on a full tank.
I like to refill between 400 to 500 miles.
