No one makes a 12V light receptacle with a charging port?

We all have lights conveniently located by the bed for reading. I have a class C with an overhead bunk that has a light fixture but there is no power anywhere around it (other than the light). If someone made light fixtures that either had a 12VDC receptacle or a couple of USB charging ports, don't you think they would sell the heck out of it?

Everyone in every bed in the coach has a cell phone that needs charging at night. Most people have a habit of checking Facebook, Twitter, RV Forums, or whatever before going to sleep. The last thing you do is reach over and plug in your phone.

As it stands, they do sell wall plate that have charging ports and/or USB charge outlets on them. The ones I see are about two inches deep. I need to mount one on the ceiling for the overhead bunk so I guess I'll have to come up with a two inch deep box to mount it in on the surface of the ceiling next to the light that is up there.

Why not use the device RoyB suggested and mount it right next to the light? It's maybe 1.5" deep.

I have one in the dash of our motorhome. I bought mine on Amazon for like $13.00. You can save a few bucks when buying a 3 pack for $31.00. I don't think I would want one mounted on the ceiling, but there should be room in the wall for these.

I use this for 12VDC to 5VDC charging and this for 110VAC to 5V DC charging.

All my RV lights are are overhead. I don't want cords dangling over my face when I sleep.

I do not recommend using an inverter (12V Dc to 110AC) iin order to charge DC battery based devices. You lose a lot of power due to conversion inefficiencies. If your campsite has 110V already that is not metered, use a 110V AC to 5V DC charger. If you are relying on the 12V DC RV system, use DC-DC.

If there is no power otherwise, would a longer charge cable work? There are 15'+ mircoUSB and Apple cables available.

I have installed a couple of these BLUE SEA USB ports in my trailer. One in the bed area and another one in Home Entertainment area. These are wired into the 12VDC lines. I am a big fan of the quality of BLUE SEA Marine 12VDC products... Available from AMAZON. WALMART has USB ports that you can plug into a cig lighter socket.



I noticed one on EBAY the other day that a small digital 12VDC LED readout on it which would be handy for you to get a glimpse of the DC VOLTAGE READING when camping off the power grid.. Don't remember who made it...

I don't think I have ever seen one mounted in the ceiling light fixture or bedroom wall light fixtures. My POPUP trailer has a PHONO PLUG in the ceiling fixtures for plugging in a 12VDC fan. I don't think I would like a cable hanging down from one of those anyway.. A permanent mount in the back of a shelf or table top would be more convenient for me to use.

There are several versions of what you want.. I can describe them but there are just too many to provide links to them.

Some are wall plates, like your regular switch cover size plates, some have only USB 5 volt outlets some also have a 12 volt accessory outlet

Some are surface mount

Some are single hole mount (liek a 12 volt accessory outlets)

and of course I have one that plugs into a standard 12 volt accessory outlet has 2 of those as well as 2 USB ports at the other end of the cord.

Most of the USB receptacles in conventional cover plate that I've seen require 120V AC. Most RV lights are 12V DC.

I have a few 12V connections in conventional boxes mounted near the bunks but rely on the USB ports in the inverter or a laptop for charging phones. Here is a 12 V dual USB receptacle that looks easy to mount on a wall or ceiling.

I solved this problem with a small inverter (200W) with a USB outlet, & 2X 110 outlets. Use the 110 outlets for laptop & white noise machine, USB for phone.
