Packets or Liquid for Black water tank

Folks,

I'd love to hear a conversation of packets vs liquid for black holding tank deodorizer. I have always dumped little bottles of the stuff and am fairly happy, but I like the idea of throwing a packet down the toilet instead because it seems less messy and more convenient. However, I want works best. Does anyone have any opinions on this matter. There are too many options out there! 🙂

Both packets and liquids have their pros and cons. Packets are definitely more convenient and less messy—just toss one in and you’re done. Liquids can be more customizable if you need to adjust the amount based on tank size.

If you’re happy with the liquid you’ve been using, it’s probably working well for you. But if you want something easier to use, packets could be a great switch. It might be worth trying a few different options to see what you like best!

the only issue is you have to temper the information in that old thread.  so much has changed, been proven not a good way to do thing, or the opposit and it is a good way.  to me the best way to find info, is to search a topic, read all the old threads then post a new topic of discussion.  this engages people that are active on the board and can get you the most uptodate information.

a good example of this is older posts on LiFePO4 batteries..  no one knew exactly what they were or how they worked so we had a lot of myths and downright falsehoods that were being spread about them due to people asuming they were the same as other Li chemistry batteries, which took years to dispell.  if you dig up old threads then that puts that thread up front for new people like your self to ready and if you don't know anything about LiFePO4 your going to go away thinking your rv is going to burn down and so on..  personaly I would like to see any thread that has been inactive for 2 years be locked to read only.  plus the fact that new topics engage more people and more board activity.

We use the "toilet bomb" packets! They are easy to pack and no risk of tipping over and spilling.

Just water here. After my trip to the dump station, I drop in a dishwasher packet that I brought from home and add a few gallons of water. figured all the sloshing around on the trip back will clean it real good. And, from what I read on here, the soap helps coat the tank so nothing sticks.

Part of my winterizing detail is cleaning the black tank. I rinse and rinse and rinse until nothing but clear liquid is coming out.

I think your thinking of washign soda, way different than soap.  soap will actualy make the walls sticky and attract things, washing soda is what makes it slipery and stopps stuff from sticking.

The dishwasher soap will coat your sensors and you won’t be able to tell how much is in the tank

I used to use the junky Thetford and Camco blue stuff, but have recently found this newer stuff that is fantastic.

this stuff is eco friendly and is safe for dumping in septic tanks.

Or... if you have the bathroom vent fan running when you flush. Try to remember to shut off the vent fan while flushing, turn back on when done.

There cannot be a draft when there is only one opening. Where does the air enter at in order to be able to vent out the top? The vent stack is there to equalize pressure, not to eliminate smell.

If a system is operating correctly the only time for potential odors is the few brief seconds the toilet is being flushed.

Ok about the smell. The smell that no such additive will completely rid the rising odors.

Seems to me the rv stink pipes are not long enough to create a proper draft. Rather than the stinky air rising upwards it lingers in the pit rising up through the bowl.

I have thoughts of a telescopic stink pipe, a whirly bird vent even a
solar powered inline pusher fan.
Any ideas? 🙂
