We finally bought our first Travel Trailer!

Well we finally did it.....we (my wife and I) bought our very first travel trailer! A Grand Design Transcend 26RLS. We are supposed to pick it up in the third week of April. We really liked the layout of the trailer. It seems to fit our needs exactly.

So now we need to pick up the other RVing essentials like sewer hoses, water hoses, surge protectors etc. Your recommendations and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

I was thinking of getting a 20' and 10' sewer hose. Is that enough? What is the best brand to use? Waste Master? Rino? Other?

I'm planning to install a hard wired surge protector. What type?

Are there any other must haves?

And... who brought up toilet paper?? lol...

We use Scott TP. Works fine, considered "septic safe" and "campground septic compatible"... at least, as far as I know, whoever and however these things are decided.

Some great info here - essentials: water pressure regulator, surge protector or EMS, fresh water hoses (we use 2x25', rarely need second but.....), wheel chocks, quality dump hoses with an extra segment and normal end adapters. You can use ANY Septic safe RV TP, we choose to waste basket damp only paper and in 20 years, never a problem.Moderation of total paper and LOTS of water is the key. Never leave the waste tanks sitting open, debris will collect, you need water to move it out. - Always dump black tank when at least 2/3 full even if that means adding water before you dump. Happy Trails!

Congrats on this new chapter for you!

Black Tank Problems can destroy a trip!

I would make sure to use RV toilet paper, good sewer hosegood sewer hose, & toilet chemicals to make sure no problems come up.

I carry 4 10 foot sections of the Rhino sewer hose, I carry 100 feet total of the white water hose 2 25 foot sections and 1 50 foot section. I have a surge guard surge protector,a watts style water pressure regulator.

Get 4 of the good rubber wheel chocks.

Get a comfortable chair some firewood, food and some cold beer and you should be good to go.

Don't go crazy buying stuff.

NEEDS are very few.

SHOULD HAVES are a little longer of a list.

And WANTS are endless.

Drawing those lines is the toughest.

This is the wisest advice you can get.

I am naturally minimalist so this was not a problem for me but got to fight with wifey who wants to bring all in and buy new stuff as if this is her new 4-bedroom house.

Get something to level yourself side to side. I like a few pieces of 3/4 treated plywood cut about 10โ€ w x the longest length that will fit between the tires and a few 2 x 10โ€™s cut about a foot long. Make sure you have a lug wrench and some sort of jack. A bottle jack works good for me.
Also get a water pressure regulator. Ten bucks can prevent your trailer from becoming a big water park for birds.
Bring a nothing will ruin my trip attitude. This could be your most valuable tool.
Have fun! Hope yโ€™all enjoy the new toy.

I'm likely the wrong guy to ask because I prepare for everything like a boy scout. Here is what I have as a emergency kit.

2 lb sledge and a regular Hammer, 3-4 misc Screwdrivers, large and small adjustable wrench, wire cutters and strippers, pliers, gorilla tape, WD-40, Dry Lube for scissor jacks, hinges, key locks, assortment of spare 12v fuses for the fuse box, couple small rolls of small gauge 12v wire and some misc connectors, Assortment of batteries, Cable ties, Roll of eternabond tape incase of a roof puncture, cordless drill and a socket set and some misc lengths or different types of rope/cordage.

That's the basics and I'm probably forgetting to tell you about another 5-10 things.

Take DrewE's last message to heart. Spend a day in your drive way or otherwise as close to home. You will quickly discover what you should have loaded.

Then find places to enjoy.

I strapped a 5x5 vinyl fence post on top of my bumper. Used hinged cover at one end and glued on cover at other with holes drilled into the covers for drainage for my sewer hose. Every hose I've seen fits into it. No rust and not abrasive to hose when you slide it in.

I use the bumper. I've seen some people put an add on PVC unit to the bumper and store it in there.
