14" to 15" tires

I have a 2013 Coleman CT270BH that came with 14" rims with ST205/75/14. Can I safely upgrade to 15" rim so that I can put LT tires on her without any issues? Will I need to do an axle flip to get additional clearance? Currently there is 6" of clearance between the axles and the top of the tire and the wheel well. Also is there a standard bolt pattern for the wheels? I have looked on the website, in my paperwork and everywhere I can think of to find out the bolt pattern. The only place I haven't looked is the back of the wheel.

There are 6-lug and 8-lug trailer axles that use 16" wheels. Most trailer axles that use 15" wheels are 5-lug, on 5" or 4.5" bolt circles.

You need too measure not just the clearance between the wheel well and the tires, but also between the two tires. And make sure you measure all four tires there's a possibly that there could be a difference at each one, if there is it won't be much but it could be enough too cause a problem. If you can do it this may be the best thing you can do that trailer.

Does the axle have brakes on it?

If it has brakes, you have to keep in mind that a significantly taller (and heavier) tire will cause the brakes to be less effective than the stock height tire. Tire diameter is a lever arm on the brakes, and weight is an inertial force that also affects the brakes. Taller/heavier tires/wheels are harder to stop.

I would not put considerably bigger/heavier 16" wheels and tires on an axle made for 14" tires. The braking performance will be practically non-existant after the tire/wheel swap.

I would go only slightly larger in tire diameter and width, on either 14" or 15" wheels.

Looks like I have a lot of research to do before I make up my mind. Leaning towards the 15"s

Are there any 15" LT tires with a D or E rating? You might want to skip 15" and go with a 16" rim. Good luck.

You can find LT tires in other than 16" rim size but you have to look far and wide. One member posted the Hankook tire he found but I'd have to wonder about availability, especially if you got a flat that couldn't be repaired (not necessarily a blow out). The availability of that tire cuould leave you stranded for a while.

I did get the same Hankook LT tire for a spare. Discount had these for me in a day. If it came to being stranded for a week, I'd definately throw another tire on and live with it till I got home. I also carry a plug kit and have an onboard air compressor. While maybe not the perfect solution it is a workable one.

I stand somewhat corrected, I should have said the LT in a 15" load range E is very difficult to find. I did the search for LT's in a 15" but when I was looking, I was looking for something that would be suitable for my TT. The load range D tire would not be adequate for the job with my TT. So, if ones TT is doesn't require the the higher capacity load rating then of course, an "LT-D" in a 15" wheel will do the job. However, anything requiring an "LT-E," you will be hard pressed to find in a 15". I could be wrong on this as well but that was my experience. I was only able to find the E in a 16" and 17", if there are other sizes I didn't look as anything larger than a 17" woudl be impracticle for my TT as I would imagine other trailers as well.

Didn't think about going up to 16's. I know the tire choice increase with each size. The extra clearance will help when boon docking in the Rockies. Already lost a leveling jack last week. I am sure I can do wheels and tires for around $600.
Yes, the extra ground clearance was a plus for me as well.. In fact the Michelin RIBS that I had put on that last TT were swapped over to my new larger TT as they were bigger and batter than what it came with.. I used the brand new ST tires as a selling point on that old TT. And I got to keep my 16" rims and Michelins getting a much needed increase in ground clearance. Those were 30" tall Michelins. At replacement time, I put 32" tall ones on. It sits just right now, and the tires actually "LOOK" to be the right size, vs. the stock tires which looked ridiculously small.

If you are going to change wheels you can find steel wheels pretty inexpensively. If you want to upgrade to aluminum wheels, that tends to up the ante. I did just that, I'm done with the ST tires so I did a little price shopping for aluminum wheels in a 16" rim size. I was trying to keep it at under $100.00/wheel and I hit what I think is the jackpot. At Shadow Trailer Parts & Accessories AKA TrailerandTruckParts.com I was able to purchase 5 aluminum wheels at $93.00 each after CA sales tax of 8%, that worked for me so I'm just passing on the info for anyone that may be interested.

There are several 14" options. I have Hankock RA08 D LT tires on our trailer. I also see BFG T/A KO tires are available in a 195/75/14. Stiff sidewalls on the TA might make for a rougher ride but they are tough tires. I didn't think I had enough room for the 15's so I searched out some 14" solutions.
