The weights in those guides are for a base vehicle and still are not accurate!

I just looked over the towing guide that came with the latest Motorhome magazine. We were looking to replace our 10 year old Jeep and found some contradictory information. The weights and prices listed in the guide for Jeeps vary significantly from those listed on the Jeep website.

Interesting that 2015 vehicles will be out soon and still no public guide for 2014. All about money, I guess.

I bet they will get right on that.:) After they sell quite a few more products based on false advertising.

I thought there were 50-states. :h

Well he corrected that eventually, 7 with out mandatory supplemental system laws and 43 with.

During a second call which I made after verifying my feeling about the law, I told Jeff(the Tech) that he was mistaken and that there were exceptions for "Towed Motor Vehicles". He reread the VC and found that I am correct, "Towed Motor Vehicles" are specifically exempt.

He did say that they would remove CA from the list of must have states. Old age and cunning will best youth and enthusiasm any time.

In the 2014 Towing Guide, RVI Brake specifically states that California requires a supplemental braking system. Period no exception, sort of. I called RVI Brake and a tech told me that it was 99% true. He said a "Towed Motor Vehicle" is considered a trailer and, therefore, requires a "Brake Away System". I tried to argue with him and he said he was reading from the Cal VC and because a towed vehicle is considered a trailer it required a brake away system. Period. End of quote. Too bad he didn't read that "Towed Vehicles are NOT Treated as a Trailer".

He also informed me that the brake away system law applies to ALL STATES.

When I suggested that his companies advertising is a veiled attempt to sell braking systems, he insisted it was the law in every state, all 48 of them.

California VC Section 26458, Subsection C, Paragraph 3, defines who is required to have the brakes.

My point being, the supplemental brake system manufacturers will say anything to sell their products, it has nothing to do with my opinion on the need to have one safety wise, it's just about false or misleading advertising.

FMCA published theirs already. I believe FMCA membership is required to access, but it is a worthwhile organization. We belong to both GoodSam and FMCA and find that each has its special niche in the RV community.
