And who knew Dorito's would make good fire starters!

I have seen something called a Swedish torch. Cut partially through a large diameter log at 90degree angle forming an X in the top of the log. Tie a cord around the opposite end to keep the log together.

Light a fire in the centre of the X. It will provide light and heat for a fairly long time. As the fire burns down the centre, the log can also be used to cook on since the inside burns faster than the outside.

Here is link to how it's done.

Also if you have wasp problem, cut the top off a large soda bottle. Turn the top upside down and place it inside the bottle. Tie either 3 or 4 strings through both parts of the cut bottle. Put a couple inches of fruit juice or beer in the bottle and hang in a tree. The wasp will be able to get in but not out.

To keep ropes from tangling, just put them into a bag using a hand over hand method. Feed the ropes in from one end to the other. Leave one end accessible without opening the bag. If needed, all you need to do is hold the loose end and throw the bag. The rope will come out without tangling. This is how many search and rescue organizations store their rescue lines.

A lot of areas would have a problem with you bringing pine cones in from different areas. Something about transporting insects/pests.

I pick up pine cones along my travels. Have a big bag in the bay of them.

Boy you light those up and they turn into fire balls!

I have a small enameled "pot" about 4" in diameter I fill with paper towels and drain the cooking grease into. I use those grease soaked paper towels as fire starter. My fire smells of sausage when I light it.
