Confused about year of my new RV

I know it's common place for manufacturers to buildchassis a year ahead and build a year later, but I'm still confused.

I just bought a 2000 Newmar Dutch star. The title says year 2000 on it, so does the carfax report. Upon doing hundreds of google searches I could not find any 2000 year dutch stars built on the GMC chassis like mine is for the year 2000. When I went to add it to my insurance the agent said its a 1998?

So I did a nada search and sure enough the year listed 2000 does not even list a GMC CHASSIS. Went back to 1999 same thing. Entered 1998 and there it is.

So what year is my motorhome? The year stamped on the title? If I ever go to sell this coach, anyone trying to insure it, or do a value search won't even be able to find it.

Also, the carfax report does not show anything entered from 2001-2008. No registration renewals, nothing? Is that normal?

Any advise?

HEY O.P.!!!!!

We're all real confused over in your other thread....is this the same rig you're talking about over there? The one that you're supposed to be picking up next week from a repo reseller and you're worried about him not having the Title?

I already answered that. I went down to purchase that unit and it was not as described and I canceled the purchase. The seller had no problems letting me back out. The coach was not in the condition he described. I found the Newmar on the drive home.

NADA isn't really going to matter anyway. No one hardly ever goes by it anymore, especially dealers. Unless of course they are trying to get you to pay higher or they are trying to pay you less for your unit. I wouldn't sweat over it. It's titled and registered as a 2000. It's a 2000.

I was just thinking about some 06 motorhomes with the F-53 chassis can have the 04 Ford chassis because Ford retooled the F-53 plant in earlier 05 and did not really make a 05 chassis, they than brought out the new improved 06 chassis in late 05 and skipped the 05 all together.

I wonder how many have this on their 06 motorhomes.

Another thing I noticed on the carfax is this unit was not actually purchased until 2001. Wow from a 1998 chassis to 2000 coach (not found anywhere) on GMC chassis no other Dutch star was built.

Also after the until was purchased in 2001 it does not popup anywhere in the report until 2008 when it was registered. Doesn't every year the vehicle registration is paid and updated show up? Or just when it's sold?

Hell I could have a one of a kind collector's item here. Lol seriously, there is not a single other Dutch Star titled as a 2000 built on a gmc chassis. NONE!

If you to review these two links posted by JJBIRISH:

Official Rule.

you would you would understand what you are confused about. The coachmaker had to buy a completed chassis which already had a VIN. The coachmaker marries the coach to the chassis and assigns a final VIN and final manufacturer date. That is in most cases the Date and VIN you want to title your coach in. The coach makers buy x number of chassis to build the coaches on. Sometimes the coach vin/date and the chassis vin/date span a couple years. Nothing at all unusual.

But Chevy sold the RV chassis (P32)business to Workhorse in Jan or Feb of 1999. So your motorhome's chassis would be pre that date, probably a late 1998. Newmar probably got a super deal and brought a whole bunch of them. But the final build date and final vin is assigned by Newmar after the coach has been built. As to where it was from when it was built in 2000 until 2008 is a unknown and the only way to find out would be to retrace the title records, and you do not want to go that expense. As to CARFAX, they have been caught with their pants down several times and can't be completely trusted. Nor can NADA in these matters. But to determine model year and vin, you need to go to the second link above. If you have problems getting the DMV to assign the Newmar date and final assembly VIN number, you should call RVIA for their assistance. That info is in those links above.

Dear Johnny Lee,
Just wanted to submit a suggestion to some song lyricsโ€ฆ
Iโ€™m still working on it, so will get back when finishedโ€ฆ
Thanksโ€ฆ

I was looking for info in all the wrong places
Looking for an RV in too many faces
Searching your eyes, looking for traces
Of what.. I'm dreaming of...
Hopin' to find a friend to share my RV with
God bless the day I discover
What year it really is
:B

have you asked Newmar for a explanation???
They issued the title and bought the chassis and married the two piecesโ€ฆ

We had a 2005 Georgie Boy Landau on a 2004 F53 chassis. We had two VIN numbers. One was for the chassis showing it was a 2004 and then one for the completed rv showing it was a 2005. I live in Florida and the vin they used was for the 2005 completed rv

Yep you will have to take that up with NADAโ€ฆ

My own position is they should be titled by the chassis VINโ€ฆ they over order chassis for convenience and cost savings that I donโ€™t believe are passed on to the consumerโ€ฆ I think it is an injusticeโ€ฆ

The thing is what I think doesnโ€™t matter one bit to them and since 2005 anyway the law is on their sideโ€ฆ

Wrong NADA does not make the law when it comes to the title year, my 08 Bounder has the 07 Ford chassis and it is titled as a 08 by NV and Cali where I bought it, and that would also be the law in all 50 states, motorhome manufactures have this right to have a year older chassis and the states allow this, even my 09 Nissan was made in 08 but its a 09 model..

However you will want to make sure that the mechanic knows the correct year of chassis for repairs.

I did not say thatโ€ฆ

He would however need to take it up with NADA why they donโ€™t even list his chassis as a possible choiceโ€ฆ

A year you say, but 2 years? And how come despite hours and hours of research I've yet to find a single other NewMar Dutch star model year 2000 built on a GMC 7.4 chassis? Was mine the only one?

In all your research have you contacted Newmar to see what they say, and what did they say???

Itโ€™s not NADAโ€™s faultโ€ฆ

it could be a dealer "Return" after a year on the lot.. NO SALE... returned to factory and freshened up and retitled...

I would think that would be illegalโ€ฆ
It could be after having it for a year, they sent it back to the chassis mfg. for some major repair before using itโ€ฆ

Either they just didnโ€™t rotate inventory well or that chassis was overlooked somehowโ€ฆ

I donโ€™t think the RV industry cares enough about things like this and I certainly wouldnโ€™t put it passed them to do something illegal eitherโ€ฆ itโ€™s really hard to say why it happenedโ€ฆ
