I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner 2 wheel drive that I am thinking of going with the drive shaft disconnect. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Kalait, You might want to send a PM to Gypsy1 as he or she may not be currently following this subforum.

Kalait, If your Xterra's front drive shaft does not turn when you are in 2WD, the driveshaft disconnect should work for you. Just put a mark on your front drive shaft and see if it's in the same position after driving the car in 2WD. You have to be certain that neither the front or rear driveshaft will be causing the transfer case to spin. I have a driveshaft disconnect on my 2000 4Runner and I'm quite happy with it. I don't use the shifter assembly because it hangs off the bottom of the rear differential and that's not very compatible with terrain that requires 4WD. I just lay down next to the car and reach under to engage or disengage the disconnect. Like the previous poster that you quoted said, you need to find a driveshaft shop that has experience with the Remco disconnect. What state do you live in?

Had a disconnect installed on my brand new Nissan xterra 2012 last week at Drive Shaft Services in Marietta GA. They are "Drive shaft Specialists" , highly recommend these guys. Very professional, and well equipped with high speed laths and welding, these guys know there business.. My installation went like a breeze, in at 10am out at noon. Cost was below average.

One very important fact that i learned, I would strongly advise anyone wanting to get a disconnect installed, do not use a RV dealer or other automotive shops that do not have the capability to cut, weld and high speed balance the driveshaft in house.

Most installers don't have the capacity to modify the driveshaft as is often required, outfits like Campers World and other RV facilities must job out the driveline modification and may tie you up for days. John or Russell at Drive Shaft Specialties are straight shooters that will give you good info and great work. 770-427-4898

I am not connected with DSS in anyway not compensated by them. Just a happy customer!:)

We are considering a class C however we are being told we cannot flat tow our Nissan Xterra SE 2010. Since using Drive Shaft Specialties how has your towing experience been?

Well I went on my first trip with the drive shaft disconnect on my 4Runner. What a horrific experience that was!! The first issue was with the brakes. (I have a brake buddy system). When we disconnect the truck and started to drive it the squeak in the breaks was awful. I was in a location with no cell service and limited services for vehicle assistance. I was able to locate a mechanic and he took care of that issue. 2 days later I was driving up a dirt road and all the sudden RPM's went up, but truck wasn't moving! I had to be towed back to campground and when I went under the truck the disconnect system was literally dangling. Nuts were missing and some of them had unscrewed half way down the screw! We ended up having it towed down the mountain a way to a service station that ended up taking the shaft out so we could it home! Now what... I am not sure I can trust this system or the installer to make this a viable option to tow the 4Runner ๐Ÿ˜ž Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I have had the remco disconnect on an s 10 for 3 years and about 15000 miles. It is a workable solution....That said make sure your installer understands how the item should work. The push knob should take only enough pressure to move, to keep the disconnect in place. If you have to grip it, its binding and will break the wire and wear out the nylon pads on the collar. Also note the position in front of the rear end. The disconnect is not protected from the center road ridge on dirt roads and will be exposed to damage. I do not use the remco equipped truck for off asphalt roading

I posted this summer about having a driveshaft disconnect installed on my 2006 Toyota 4 Runner. Well I did it and I have to it hasn't gone well so far. After along drawn out install I took my truck home and noticed there was something leaking from the rear end! I called the dealer and they said there was nothing they had done that would cause this to happen. Well I took it back in today and wouldn't you know they found it was their mistake! I don't understand all this stuff, but I can tell you some part of the shaft was ground down too much so that it would fit into a u bolt that would hold it in place. The last I was told is they may patch the hole by sauntering it? Any ideas if this is the right fix? I am so mad I can't post what I want to say! Thank you for your replies in advance.

I spoke with a dealer here in SoCal and they told me SureFlo is closed until middle of August. Guess we'll just have to wait!

We are also trying to get the part and understand the company that makes the part (SuperFlow) and they do not have the parts. We were told it could take 8-12 weeks to get the parts.....

You might want to check and see if you can find a disconnect. REMCO sold that part of their business and the company that bought it has been reported to not be making them at the present time.

Been using one going on 20 years with no issues. Lubricate the cable and mechanism with dry silicone twice a year.
