Electric Coolers

Does anyone have an electric cooler? We usually keep our beverages in a regular cooler and not in the refrigerator of the TT. Saw one of these electric coolers, Coleman made this one, it was AC and had an outlet for a vehicle. During the hot summer months we go through a lot of ice. LOL We probably take too many beverages,etc...

But does it work better than yer similar-size basic hundred dollar "dorm type" fridge/freezer? link to one

Now that we're talkin' compressor units: except for the fact that one is upright and one is chest-style how do these differ?

I am kind of wondering the same question myself. My outdoor kitchen on the fiver has about the same fridge as in your link and it works excellent so I dont know why I would spend 500 on one, can someone help me understand the difference.

Let me just throw this out there,, I am not naming any specific company or brand,, but being in the business,, these early brands of Thermoelectric coolers were at the center of allot of investigations... vehicle and structure.. NOT POINTING BLAME AT ALL!!
Just personnel observations,, These are NOT meant to replace full time units and consume CONSTANT power (12V), They do as advertised,, but get very hot!!! Some are still in service today if used properly.. But again,,focus has been on a few in the past,, be sure to follow manufactures directions and recommendations!!

That's one reason along with not having the fins frost over that I have mine on a 110V plug in power supply and that is on a timer that I have to cycle every 6 to 12 hours for 1/2 to 1 hour off. When traveling w/o 110 I plug it directly into 12V, but that is for less than 12 hours anyway.

I also installed a programmable T-stat, but it generally never shuts the unit off so it's sort of useless.

We have a Dometic camp mobile refridge. It's a 12v/120v/lp. Uses the 1# cylinders. It's what we used when we had the tent trailer. Works great. It also had a little ice cube tray. Its mainly for the sodas and beer. Sold the trailer but kept the camp fridge.

I have at least 3 thermoelectric coolers that work well for keeping drinks cold, even in high temps they do okโ€ฆ
I also have 2 dorm sized fridge/freezer units and they also work greatโ€ฆ but they donโ€™t have much of a freezer and the fridge is cooled by gravity of the cold freezer airโ€ฆ they work good but not greatโ€ฆ and I have a dorm sized commercial fridge with an ice makerโ€ฆ it works really well as a fridge and makes ice pretty fast with a big ice storage hopper the keeps the ice frozenโ€ฆ

I donโ€™t have one of the fridge freezers mentioned but know a few that do, and they seem to work better as either a fridge or a freezer in regard to quicker cool down and more steady temp holdโ€ฆ
They are too expensive but I think they are worth the price if you really need and use itโ€ฆ
I should have bought one of them instead of the last 2 thermoelectric I boughtโ€ฆ the third thermoelectric is small and kept in the car and I use it often for drinks and medical purposesโ€ฆ

EDIT:

I forgot one time I needed more freezer space for an extended stay and I bought an old dorm fridge/ freezer at a flea market and removed the freezer door to allow the freezer air to better circulateโ€ฆ it worked to keep everything (pre-frozen) in the fridge frozen for the durationโ€ฆ it wasn't cold enough to keep ice-cream rock hard though, but it didnโ€™t thaw eitherโ€ฆ it was well worth the $15 investmentโ€ฆ

Great information here. We've been wanting a good electric cooler for a while. I've been looking at the Coleman type, but the reviews were terrible.

I ordered the 63 quart Edgestar from Amazon this morning. Got free shipping. Now, if it can get here in Washington State before Friday.

LOL, I never thought I would spend over $500.00 on a freaking cooler.... ๐Ÿ™‚

But buying two bags of ice every other day gets old too...

mark my word you're gonna wonder why you waited so long ! Its amazing how much room ICE takes up in a cooler. I was impressed with how much more i could get in a cooler when i didn't need ice.

can't wait to hear your review.

let me know when you're ready to put it on a slide out in your basement & i can make some recommendations for slides.

But does it work better than yer similar-size basic hundred dollar "dorm type" fridge/freezer? link to one

Now that we're talkin' compressor units: except for the fact that one is upright and one is chest-style how do these differ?

These coolers have compressors and can get down to below zero, which isn't very handy for a cooler, but they get as cold as you would like, and chill items down quickly. They can be used as a freezer too, so if you're going into the Big City to buy frozen stuff, you can keep your groceries frozen until you get back to camp.

The cheapo Colemans only get down to ambient less 40 degrees, and take a long time to do that. So on a hot day, in the back canopy of a truck with an ambient of 100 degrees, you're looking at a cooler temp. of about 60 degrees.

Guess I asked the question wrong- we're all done talkin' about "thermoelectrics'!
Now we're on compressor fridges...the hundred dollar fridge I linked to ALSO has a compressor. It's an upright minifridge/freezer like you find in motels. Just tryin' to find out what the diff is, performance-wise, between it and the $500.00 compressor coolers we're now talking about.

I got both one of the Danfoss compressor type Frig/Freezer (NORCOLD MRFT-40) and a small compact like 12qt. Kooltron Peltier type thermoelectric cooler. We use the NORCOLD as an aux freezer and the Kooltron mainly for things like salad dressings and veggies to save refer space in our main refer. Each has it use an I run the Kooltron on a plug in 12V supply hooked up to a timer so the element won't freeze up (on 12hrs and off 1hr). Only downside is you have to watch the cooling fins in the Kooltron or they will frost over and reduce it's cooling efficiency.

I have both an Engel 45 and Edgestar 86 quart.
They are both adjustable from 50 to -10. I use one as a freezer and one as a fridge. Nice and dry without ice and double the room for food.
Both heavy and expensive, Engel more $$.

I have a coleman thermoelectric from years ago and it sucks. I have not used it in over 10 years. The only good thing about it is that you can reverse it and the peltier plate becomes a heater. Now you can keep foods hot.
