exterior US map stickers - protocol?

This may seem trivial, but I really want to know what you think.

Many of us affix a U.S. map sticker to the outside of our motorhomes, filling in teh states we've traveled to. My question is this:

Do you
fill in any state you've been to?
fill in only states you've traveled to by MH?
fill in ONLY states you've been to in that particularMH ?

Like I said, it sounds trivial but this has been bothering me as I have a new map to stick on our new Fleetwood.

THANKS!!!!!

That's what I'm afraid of. My trailer has a map from the previous owner on it. They'll catch up with me some day.

but you have to actually, physically stay there, none of this "we drove through it" stuff right?

I'm actually of the opinion that the journey is part of the experience. Many times we stop in states to eat or check out a park or other destination. I don't have a map on our current TT, but if I did I would include states we've visited, not just the ones we've stayed overnight in. It should be a journal of everywhere the RV has been, not just where it has rested overnight.

If I leave NJ and travel to Ohio, but pull over in a rest area in PA and eat in the TT, I'm putting PA on my map! 😉

I also agree that it should be a conglomerate of where I've been to, not specific to any one RV. I've owned 3 PUs and 2 TTs over the last 25 years, so I wouldn't want to start over each time.

But as others have said, follow your own preferences. Until you get a letter in the mail from the National RV Map Association.

FWIW, our map is dual purpose. States colored in for where we've been on the bikes (40); further IDed for the states we've been to with the RV (only 6 so far).

I don't stickers on my rigs, we collect magnets and put them on the fridge. I need a bigger fridge.

We had a pop-up for 12 years and just bought a new TT. I am not starting my map over as I fill in a state once I have camped at least one overnight and I want it to represent my camping history overall and not just with one camper.

I have trouble enough figuring out where I am without worrying about where I've been.

I'm always curious about what people do as "rules" as well.

For us, we decided as a family what our rules are. We don't have to actually camp overnight in the state. Because, technically, we could drive 12 hours, sleep in a state, and drive out first thing in the morning without ever really seeing the state or experiencing it. That's not exactly memorable for us.

We have decided that to earn our sticker, we have to actually do something in the state. Driving through doesn't count and sleeping in the state doesn't count. We must get out of the car and do something. Visit a garden, museum, stroll through downtown area, see a national landmark, etc.

There was a time when people knew that 'camping' included tents and not just an RV.

I have camped in 48 states, either in a tent or an RV.

I added Hawaii because I did sleep in a chair on the beach and while there was not a piece of canvas between me and the outdoors, I consider that as close as I am going to get to camping in Hawaii. 🙂

I have been RVing and camping for most of my 72 years and have never even owned one of those US sticker maps. I know where I have been and sometimes where I am going, that is all that matters to me..

I agree. That's the way I do it. However, like most have said, the owner of the map decides the rules they follow in adding states to the map.

We met someone you drove a few miles into a state and exited again and then put that state on his map. Now that's cheating!
