What is the formula for calculating the maximum vehicle weight that can be towed? We are considering purchasing a Jeep Unlimited to tow behind our MH (gasser).

I was told that the Towed Vehicle should not exceed 20% of the Combined Vehicle weight!

I'm not sure if this is the formula that You are after!

Naturally there are several other factors to consider, including.....

Hitch and Tow Bar Ratings , Engine and Transmission , Braking !

The formula is GCVWR - GVWR = tow . Not to exceed hitch or towbar ratings.

Weigh the coach ready to go with gear and people. Weigh the toad. The combined weight should not exceed the GCVW printed somewhere inside the coach.
The JKU is too heavy for ours, but we chose to tow it anyway after close inspection and just returned from a 7K mile plus trip around the country. Tows great and the only weak area is the transmission, so this needs to be addressed in some fashion when climbing through the worst of the Rockies.
