Put me in with the 2400 Yamaha crowd. Generally if I think we will need ac I am looking for an electric site, but I have done plenty of boondocking and DEC style campgrounds with no hookups. The single 2400 runs the ac fine, although you may need an easy start capacitor. They are a little heavy for some to manage, which is the only reason I would consider having a 2 genny setup.

Use a Yamaha 2400 -> which is just as quiet as Honda generators and weighs less than 3000 watt generators.

Were I to do it all over again, I'd buy three Honda eu 2000i models and use the triple parallel kit from Wise Generator Sales. This gives me about 4500 watts usable, which is enough to handle the inrush current from even a 15,000 BTU A/C, and I can always just go with two generators for most purposes.

Just checked Champions NEW web site. They do have a 2000 model #73536i that is as you say 53db at 23'

I stand corrected.

I'm a fan of Champion generators in consideration of performance, cost & customer service. Although the Honda & Yamaha are the most popular, I believe Champion deserves it's place with the big two.

I agree with others that have mentioned the weight factor. Two, 2000 watt Champion units may be best, at only 57 lbs each. They are rated at 53db at a distance of 23'

I don't know where you got the 53db at a distance of 23' from.

On Champion Power Equipments web site their Model #73534i 2000W inverter generator has a db rating of 68db at 23 feet and a dry weight of 48.5 lbs

Yes.

I have boondocked all over this good country, and I've seen very few fellow campers running air with a generator. They're usually outside when it's 90ยฐ+.

It's a nice idea, and it works, it's just that for the noise, the smell and the hassle of gas, folks just don't do it.

...and just to add to 2oldman's comments, we, too, just don't see very many folks running their air on generator(s) when boondocking. When we have seen it, it's been in those situations, typically in the desert southwest or other similar climate, when the temps are consistently in the mid to upper 90's or higher. In those situations, we'll usually run our generators/air long enough to get the inside temp down to a livable level in the late afternoon or early evening.

Lots of good comments on this string. If price is no object, then I'd go with two 2000i Hondas, Yamahas, or Champions in that order. Hooking two in parallel will give you the power you need, with the additional advantage of easier carrying. As for me, I would be hard pressed to move a 3000i unit of any manufacture out of the bed of my truck. Much easier to do this with single 2000i units. You also have the advantage of using only one if all you need do is charge up the batteries or run other, lower power AC appliances.

As for us, we have had a pair of Champion 2000i's for a few years now and have had nothing but good, reliable service. At a cost less than half of what I could find for a red (Honda) or blue (Yamaha) setup, I haven't seen the value in paying the premium. JMHO.

Which would you want in the campsite next to you?????

After quiet hours I want them both off, before quiet hours a generator is generally not a bother, it is the music/TV/kid/truck/4 or 2 wheel toy noise I object to.

In fact, a generator with a steady sound will let me fall asleep easier. Did I mention I am an old tanker ๐Ÿ™‚

Personally I would get the quietest solution WHILE running the air conditioner. That would be the big expensive 3000w or bigger units. A pair of the smaller units running together are as loud as my open frame Champion 3500/4000 with remote start while running the Air. I would never consider running it in a camp ground.

Now if you boondock like us and only use it for the air anyways, it's a nice unit. $425 and I can sit on the couch, push a button and turn on the air.
