Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Another member suggested a new forum section with new products but it doesn't look like it will be feasible. So I thought I would post this here under General RVing Issues. If enough people post (even if you have mentioned it before in another post) we can keep it near the top?

Do you have a handy hint, a new product or an old product that makes your RVing or Camping much better?

(Sorry, no commercial advertising allowed)

I'll start:

Someone in the Camping Van posted a reference to using a Super-Chamois to wipe down their shower. I have been using an icky old thick sponge and I like the chamois idea so much more.

Now I want to hear what works for you

Harbor Freight has some http://www.harborfreight.com/finished-size-mesh-tarp-60576.html that are reasonably priced and work real well attached to the awning to provide shade under the awning. I carry 2 if we do not have shade I hang one on the awning roller and it lowers the temp under the awning drastically. The other I attach to the slide awning if that is in full sun and it helps a lot. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dung Beetles, I made mine. I purchased a piece of the woven cloth at Walmart that was 6' wide and 18' long. I bought grommets and placed them every 2 feet on the top and 4 of them on the bottom. I use my light hooks on my awning to hold the top and I put stakes in the ground and stretch it out at the bottom and use the "balled" bungee cords to hook to the stakes.

It is the same material that is used in the purchased ones, but they only had one color, tan.

1.Bathroom on the door I hang a clear plastic shoe rack for all of those little things that take up room.
2.Kitchen 3M hooks hold a 12" piece of cloth tripple folded for strength. I put button holes in the material and that is where I hang all of my pan scrapers and wooden spoons. I use two rows, bottom row is between first row for spoon head room.
3.Basket for Oil, vinager, that kind of stuff in fall everything goes in house and gets used up during winter then replaced new in spring. If we do winter camping it is ready to go.
4.Space bags are great for the bedding not used often.
5.Have a little cupboard that I use for can goods. Again 3M hooks I
made a cloth strip with pockets that I use for plastic grocery bags.
6.I made my own shade cloth for the awning, with hooks and everything was less then $50.00.
7.I make bags to hold many things that go into storage area to keep it neet and together. If you don't sew, onion and potatoe bags will work.
8.I use a double sided fishing tackle container, one side fuses and bulbs, the other is for sewing any mending that I do on the road.

I think you're a handy dandy person! Do you have any photos of your " shade cloth for the awning, with hooks and everything"? I'd love to see how you did that!

Thanks in advance!

A MUST HAVE NEW CAMPER/KITCHEN TOY!!!

Last Christmas (yep.. it's been sitting that long) I bought a "Cameron Stovetop Smoker" for our house gift. It ended up getting tucked back in a cupboard and I almost forgot about it. I decided to get it out today and smoke some fresh salmon my hub caught. We were BLOWN AWAY!!! I read the directions several times thinking "No WAY can it really be this easy???". Then, I watched a couple "Youtube" videos on it.

No joke.. I followed the directions for salmon steaks and with just 1.5 T. of fine Alder shreds, and 22 minutes on the stove it produced moist delectably smoked (cooked to perfection) steaks!! I'm in disbelief! I know what I'm getting both the kids for Christmas. They will go insane playing with this thing. It can be used on a gas/electric stove AND a BBQ!

Those rope lights on the ground around the RV will help repel rodents too.

Magic Carpet Pilot, we put the rope lights on the ground too. DH likes to put them all the way around the rv, so we can also see better when we go to get things out of the bins on the back side at night.

I have used the rope lights as "landing lanes" when backing into a site after dark. I just laid them down and backed in alongside them nice and straight.

This is a laundry tip ...

I use BABY POWDER to remove grease stains (new or old) from garments. Just rub the powder into the stains prior to washing (you can use an old powder puff). When I notice the stain I get out the powder, powder the stains, roll up the garment, throw it in the dirty clothes basket - then launder as usual. You'll be amazed!! :E

I've even used baby powder in the MH. Last year we had several mosquitoes get into the MH & spent a lot of time killing them before we went to bed. Some landed on the upholstered accents which left spots when cleaning the remains with a wet paper towel. So when I was told about the baby powder trick I took an old toothbrush - dabbed it into some powder & after a few lite applications the stain was gone. Just remember DO NOT USE WATER, except when washing clothing.

Hope you give this a try - IT DOES WORK!!

The Amazing Goop glue , glue about anything to anything very easily , all sorts of uses .
I glue things to my walls instead of nails/screws
I used it to hold wires in place.
Anything that breaks you can glue back together.
You can build / fabricate custom parts by glueing stuff together
Made a substitute for a rubber grommet thru fire wall to protect wires , seems to hold up to heat too.
The way to use it is ,,,, if you want to be able to remove what you glued in the future ,,, dont use very much goop ,,,,, if you use a lot of goop its going to be very very hard to remove in the future .

I have had my new to me Shadow Cruiser for a little over a month now and had one 4 day off grid camp trip to shake loose any additional mods I needed to do. Here are the highlights of the mods I have done.

1 - We like having a little light when coming and going so I added a small light that shines straight down and at 45 degrees forward and back. It only draws 16 mA. I wired it to the same switch as the outside light.

2 - The refrigerator has a fan on the condenser for extra cooling but it runs more than needed so I added an off switch. Plan A was a different temperature sensor but the one I ordered was to large so plan B.

3 - Added a small down pointing light for mode lighting and when just cleaning up before bed or in the morning when you really don't want bright lights. I wired it to the water pump switch on the demand pump. An extra reminder to turn off the pump before we go to bed or leave the camper. The reflect can be used for more direct light or left off for more glow. Only 35 mA draw.

4 - Hard to see from the picture but it is a micro toggle switch that I wired across the thermostat on/off switch. As long as I have the thermostat set at a reasonable temperature I can turn the furnace on from the bed on those cold mornings. We normally have enough sleeping bag and blankets to not need over night heat but it is nice to get up to a warm camper. Our previous camper had the thermostat with in reach of the bed.

5 - Dual 2. amp USB charger. Nice but does have an idle draw of 15 mA.

6 - This is the same light as I used in #3 but without the reflector so it mostly shoots down but gives off an over all glow. The switch is the small black spot above it. Gives us some low level mood lighting when we are just sitting around the camper on out iThings or whatever.

7 - Can't see it but it is a small battery operated LED light that is the middle of the night pee light (PortaPot is in the front cabinet). Not sure were I got it, used it in the previous camper. Have another one in one of the kitchen cabinets so the wife can find what pan she needs. They take two button batteries and are about 1"X2"

8 - I switched to fixtures that have switches for each bulb so we can fine tune the amount of lighting we want. Camper had 3 double fixtures that I swapped out, bought them off eBay for around $25 shipped. All 3 fixtures are now equipped with LED lighting.
Kitchen area - 145 lumens ea and 195 mA draw.
Living area - 70 lumens each and 135 mA draw
Bed area - 20 lumens each and 25 mA draw.

The kitchen area ended up brighter than necessary I would probably drop back to the 70 lumen bulbs I put in the center fixture if I was doing it over and save a few dollars.

9 - 12 volt sockets 4 outlet (one has a plug in volt meter). I wired this directly to the battery with 14Ga wire through a 10 amp fuse. Use it for additional USB adapters when needed and other toys that need to be plugged in.

10 - I added several stainless loop tie downs around the camper to secure items while traveling. You can see how we use a set to secure two lawn chairs.

11 - The Shadow Cruiser had a strange dinette setup. They had a raised platform with two small storage compartments that the table sat on with longer posts. They then used the shown shorter legs when the dinette was made into a bed. We like an open floor plan so we can sit in lawn chairs when we are inside because of weather, because they are more comfortable than the normal dinning area. I took out the raised platform since there is just two of us and we don't sleep on the dinette. I mounted the table sockets on a piece of wood and it sits where one of the cushions normally sits. Two of us can still eat at it or the wife can use it for more counter space. It all stores under the bed or stapes to the wall.

12 - We eliminated all the cushions, they just get in the way most of the time. I carpeted the bare wood that was exposed from removing the cushions and we have two high density sports cushions we can use when we need to sit where the cushions use to be. The Shadow cruiser has a fold up platform over by the door normally part of dinette bed but it makes a good second seat. The table actually has a sliding top and can be slid further into the room when we are eating.

Two truck modifications. I added the reflector strips years ago, they actually show under the tailgate when it is on and gives more visibility from the back.

Our previous camper was short enough we could leave the tailgate on which was nice for coming and going form the camper. The SC sticks out to far so I added the yellow diamond plate on top of the bumper to fill in the gap at the license plate. My idea and friend made it work and constructed most of it. It attaches with two bolts in the center back of the bumper. There is a piece of angle iron welded to the center section and with two well placed holes it allows the bolts to clamp the plate to the bumper.

I have made a few other mods but they are fairly standard stuff or very specific to a SC like adding a rail for a bag awning and adding lots of special attachments in the storage compartment to optimize the space. A few more small things to do yet but pretty much the way we want it for now.

Whohoooo! Big score at a thrift store today! I am an avid watcher of the "Food Channel", and other cooking shows. I do love my kitchen gadgets and do-da's! I have been wanting a nice "grill" pan to use when it's tooo stormy or cold to grill outside. Been looking for about 5 months now.

SCORED a near NEW 12" Calphalon grill pan for under $4.00 today. Not a scratch on it! I'm a happy CAMPER FOR SURE!

When we upgrade I'll have to look for a TT/5th Wheel that has a gourmet kitchen in it! Wonder if ALL the TT kitchens are basically the same.

I modified / cut window blind to fit the windshield area and then mounted it upside down to get it to work , I'm going to include a mod I learned on here which is to restring the blind using 50# FISHING string
