How fast do you honestly tow?

And if over 70 mph do you really feel safe? I was traveling in my car on the freeway today. I trailed a rver who seemed to be moving pretty fast. I matched his speed at 77 mph. He was pulling about a 32' aluminum travel trailer which had the axles flipped, so it road pretty high off the ground with the nose angled down to the knuckle. The pickup was a short bed F150.

Just my perspective, but man that was way to fast, especially for the setup he had. I'd wager he had his foot buried in the pedal.I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong. Why do so many push he envelope? If I had to be in that much of a hurry I'd give up camping. I tow at 65 - 68, maybe that's too fast?

So what say you is really a safe speed?

I have no problem towing 7,000lb trailer at 75mph with my Dodge Diesel and did it with my 2004 F150 in the past as well. NEVER HAD A ISSUE OR FELT UNSAFE.

A constant 55 - 60mph, unless we're going a little slower due to traffic. We're retired and in no hurry. We try to stay off the interstates as much as possible too. Hate driving on those!

I set the cruise at 62 mph. Any faster and I lose too much gas mileage. If I lower it to 55, I also lose gas mileage because it is right at the shift point so if I hit a slight uphill grade, it downshifts. That doesn't happen nearly as often at 62.

At 62 I get 8mpg. At 72 I get 6 mpg. So, for a 15% increase in speed, I lose 25% of my gas mileage.

55 for me.. 65 if going downhill. 35 uphill.

65 is the limit of the SP tires on trailers. I usually drive anywhere from 55-65 mph depending on the wind.

My rig feels right at 60 mph. I'll go slower rather than faster than that, depending on traffic and/or weather.

I put my cruise control at 59 mph. Based on the roadside mph detector/displays that's 57 mph for my truck. Those signs are consistently 2 mph lower than my speedometer. I feel very comfortable at that speed. I get comfortable driving at 70, but when I slow down to 60 or 55 the difference in comfort and sense of safety is huge for me. So put me in the 55-60 range.

I've run over 70 mph a few times but I run mostly around the same speed as you.

However the guy you saw may have pulled that setup many thousands of miles and knows exactly how it will react, so he feels perfectly fine going that fast. Just does no good trying to second guess the other driver and will drive you crazy. 🙂 If he wasn't weaving or moving around I'd just say c'est la vie and let it go.

I know some people that feel driving over 100 mph on a bike is just nuts, but mine feels perfectly stable up to, and over 130 mph. To-may-to, to-mah-to.

55 MPH but sometimes I may reach 65 or 70 for a minute or two
