How fast do you honestly tow?

And if over 70 mph do you really feel safe? I was traveling in my car on the freeway today. I trailed a rver who seemed to be moving pretty fast. I matched his speed at 77 mph. He was pulling about a 32' aluminum travel trailer which had the axles flipped, so it road pretty high off the ground with the nose angled down to the knuckle. The pickup was a short bed F150.

Just my perspective, but man that was way to fast, especially for the setup he had. I'd wager he had his foot buried in the pedal.I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong. Why do so many push he envelope? If I had to be in that much of a hurry I'd give up camping. I tow at 65 - 68, maybe that's too fast?

So what say you is really a safe speed?

In the Northeast Highways are usually in poor condition, short, hilly, not strait and often busy. That said for the most part I go between 62 to 67... rarely to I pass any other Rvers.

My towing speed is around 62 MPH, or about 1800 RPM in high gear. Seems to be the "sweet spot". I'm never in a hurry to get somewhere.

I go with the flow (to a point) on two lane roads usually about 60, interstates and other four lanes I roll about 65. We have a solid stable rig, steers like it is on rails, two lanes with no shoulder are normal fare for getting to the coast.

Most times 62/64 on interstates. But not being retired some times I'll take it up above that. And NO we are not running ST tires

I took all the posted speeds at the higher end when specified. The average speed came to 63.43 mph. It is probably a little slower. I omitted the 105 mph as that's just not normal and not their usual speed.

Of 61 noted speeds - 5 were 70 mph or over. Certainly not the majority. And by the results it seems I'm pushing it a little at 68. I plan to change this up on my next trip and really watch the fuel consumption to see if there is a noticeable change. I get 10 -11.5 now.

The consensus seems to be safety first. It's comforting to know most people have their fellow travelers and their families in mind when traveling down the road. ๐Ÿ™‚

You folks towing 75 and up, don't let anyone talk you out of it. Our paramedics and EMTs need the practice.:R

Generally I set the cruise control at 62 mph if the law allows, slower if mandated. I have no problem maintaining that speed up, down or sideways with the F-250 and 6.7 motor and the fuel mileage is pretty constant at 13.5 while pulling my 2890RL Passport.

I run 62 with the same truck and engine. Trailer is 2 foot shorter. I get about 13.1 MPG in PA, a bit less than you but we have hills here.

55mph max = 13 mpg. A lot of Americans have given their lives for the oil we burn. The least I can do is my best to conserve it. Without the trailer I max out at 65 = 24 mpg. We drive a lot more without trailer than with.

Just made a trip from Dallas Texas to Durango Colo. and back and kept it at 65 MPH except when passing slower moving vehicle. Would speed up to 70 MPH to get around and not stay in left lane too long.

Calif limits vehicles towing to 55 mph. I usually run at about 60-62.

you ought to give that a try on any of the Illinois tollways especially I-355 or I-88 (otherwise known as the Illinois Autobahn) at any time other than rush hour. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's all about mass.Somehow I'd think the smaller or lighter vehicle is in a no win situation by doing something stupid.Really sounds like a great opportunity to increase a states revenues.

Illinois can use it. I drive I-88 nearly every day at 62-mph (55 zone) and rarely see a state police vehicle.
