I've done it for years.
I no longer will do it with my ski boat, as I upgraded and the new boat is just too big. But I still tow my 16' fishing boat behind my 5er.
I added a 60 gallon auxiliary fuel tank to solve any fueling concerns. I drop the boat in the parking lot at the boat ramp, go park my 5er, come back and get the boat.
Sure beats taking two vehicles.

I have towed approximately 40 thousand miles with this set-up. We have been to Utah, Nevada, Oregon (before they changed the laws),

This subject is always interpreted differently by everyone. The only thing everyone seems to agree on is the total length in CA cannot exceed 65'. I towed a 24' FW and a 20' flatbed trailer and it worked good. Old law stated it had to be a FW and a watercraft but that is not the case anymore.
It takes more space to hook and unhook, you have to make sure what you drive into you can drive out of, more things to maintain.
Ideal with a boat or OHV's as you can set up camp and still move the toys around with the truck and second trailer.

If you pull in to get gas and can not drive straight out let the wife take it on in from there.
