? Is This a Viable Grab Handle Fix?

Still playing with thoughts on a better replacement for the sun-wrecked foam on the RV grab handles. Anyone try anything like this?:
Wrap grab handle with 1/8 to 1/4" cord then cover with a tube of sun- & weather-resistant heat-shrink wrap.

I used the black insulation that goes on residential Air Conditioning piping. It is solid and is not slit like pipe insulation. It is flexible and the right diameter and not super thick.

A lot of boaters just use the cord as a wrap. Wind it tightly and then use a good glue for each end to hold it in place.

You can buy replacement foam, use Plastidip, leather, steering wheel cover, etc.
That said, cord with heat shrink sound fine, as well.
