Locked Out!

I knew today was going to be interesting from the start. First and totally unrelated to RVing my wife comes into the bedroom late last night and demands I get up RIGHT NOW as there is a snake in the bathroom. So I do as she says and take a look and sure enough a 4 foot black snake has decided to check out the place. I get a broom and catch the guy and take him outside, and go back to bed. I spend most of the night trying to think of from where he could have come in. No idea yet.

Well, the next morning while taking some articles out to the MH for a week at the lake, I find the door will not open. We don't lock it while in the drive way so I know it isn't locked but I try the keys anyway. No luck. All the windows are locked down, I thought about removing the hinge pins but find that to be a more than I wanted to try. So instead I drill through a window frame enough to get at the window lock and voila I'm in. I end up having to take the door lock mechanism apart (a good bit of swearing) where I find the spring loaded latch has broken in the closed position.

So, it's off to Camping World for a new door lock and hope they have one that fits and in stock so we can make it to the lake in the morning.

I would not have to worry about a door not opening if I found a snake in our fiver. Either I would have broken through the door trying to get out or there would be several large holes from a shotgun that either I or the snake would have exit from. Yes, my wife and I are both afraid of snakes and he is in my house uninvited.

Kinda like the key "confusion".

The snake was *not* in his RV.

BTW - OP......check the yellow pages for Mongoose Rentals..:B

Glad you didn't have to kill the black snake.

My guess would be that he has the older Trimark 60-0650 lock assembly that was prone to breaking the cast latch bolt. Hopefully, CW will have the newer 60-1650 replacement in stock with its redesigned latch mechanism.

Yep latch was indeed broken. 14 year old unit, plenty of door closing / slams over the years. Got a new Tri-Mark at CW and installed it. No instructions, but an easy job.

And to be clear, the snake was in my log cabin home, not the mh

Did you get the newer 60-1650 lock? The new design latch appears to be stronger than the old one. I also found it works more smoothly, needing less effort to close the door.

The only number on the box is Tri Mark T-507. I plan to get a new MH in about 15 months when my first SS check comes in so if it lasts that long great. This is the one I got... Lock

Yep, that's the new 60-1650. The quick identifier is the rounded right side versus the square design of the 60-0650. That one should last a good long time.

If I found a snake in my bathroom the house and its entire contents would be for sale today and I would be far, far away.

agree ! doesnt have to be expensive to solve the problem.
ONLY my wife knows where the hidden key is & what to look for.

a note to all....just remember to put the key back after you've used it.

I just bought (and am now returning) a replacement lock that had a key pad on it....
The key & keypad only operated the deadbolt - there was no handle lock.

personally i would like to be able to OVERRIDE the keypad/dead bolt....if someone were traveling with me i might want to be able to keep them out, even if they had the keypad combination, further at night i would like to be able to over ride the key pad (a handle lock would be enough) to prevent someone from trying to enter.

my point here is - there are electric keypad systems that replace your existing door handle / locks - so you wouldn't have to worry about locking a key inside.

We keep spare truck keys in the camper and spare camper door keys behind the hot water outside door.

I'd show a picture but with a little electrical tape on the wire harness the keys are invisible .
