Loose Wheels!!!

In October 2012, we were southbound on I-5 in the vicinity of Bakersfield, CA, when the left rear dually wheels on our Silverado simultaneously flew off the truck and overtook us. The hub hit the pavement with a huge thump and we went screeching down the highway, leaving a huge gouge in the pavement. Fortunately, my husband was able to pull the truck/camper and our boat over to the side and yelled to me to watch where the wheels were going. We sat there watching the wheels bouncing down the highway in front of us, across the ditches. The car that was driving in the left lane beside us swerved onto the median to avoid the flying wheels. One wheel went across the 2 lanes of oncoming traffic, narrowly missing two oncoming cars. The other wheel went to the right, across a canal and into a farmers field. I climbed through a barbed wire fence, down the roadside ditch, across the farmers side road, down into the canal ditch (6 ft. deep, muddy, but no water,) and then went across the plowed field (probably 1,000 yards,) to retrieve the wheel. It was hot, sunny, very dusty and the wheel was very heavy.

No one stopped to help and we did not have a cellphone, so we made a "help" sign, and started waving. Soon three very nice ladies stopped and let us use their phone. They stayed with us for over an hour, until they were sure we were safe, and we will always be grateful to them for the time spent with us!!! The California Highway Patrol officer also came by twice, first time to see what the matter was, then 2 hours later just to check and see if we were okay and if help was coming. When the officer was leaving after his second visit, my husband said "Guess I should be singing: You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel"

It was quite scary and traumatic to stand there and have traffic whizzing by at 75mph - less than six feet from where we were standing. At one point while we were waiting, we climbed thru the barbed wire fence and sat in the dirt on the bank of the farmerโ€™s road, just to get away from the traffic rushing by. Every time an 18-wheeler whizzed by, the truck/camper rocked, so we could not sit in it, but we had to leave our cat inside. Guess I have been watching too much TV!!! I had visions of cars coming off the road and crashing into us!!!

We were on the soft shoulder for 12 hours, while a repair truck, dispatched by Good Sam, came out at 6p.m. and repaired the damage ON THE SOFT SHOULDER!!! He worked for about 7 hours in the narrow space between the truck and the lane of traffic! He had to remove everything, including the axle!! When he was finished, the repairman took us to the nearest Walmart - it was 2am by this time, and he promised to return next morning to check on us.

The repairman returned the next day and rechecked the wheels. Then he took us to a tire shop in Bakersfield to get the spare tire repaired. The left rear fender and truck box was all smashed, and the repair bill was COSTLY!!! We only retrieved one wheel...it was too dangerous to cross the highway to retrieve the other. However, there was no loss of life to anyone else on the highway, and we are alive, safe and well, although a bit shaken up. While at Walmart, we bought a disposable cell phone for use on our travels. There was a very nice young gentleman at the electronics department of Walmart who did the activation for me - above and beyond his job, but he saw we were technically challenged, as well as shaken up!

As we had our truck serviced before we embarked on our travels, we reported the incident to the Dealership. They were wonderful, accepted responsibility, and made good on all repairs!!! Evidently, their torquing tool malfunctioned and the lug nuts were not tight enough.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. It reminds me of why I purchased an expensive certified Craftsman torque wrench and why I run around and check all of the lugs before every (alright most) trip. It's a PITA but sooo worth it.

The Highway Patrol guy should have arranged for you to retrieve the other wheel safely.

There was no warning wiggle, pop, noise or any indication that we were about to lose the wheels! The truck just slammed to the ground! My husband has been RV'ing for 40 years without incident, luckily he is an excellent driver and his calm reaction saved the day!!! Someone was watching over us and all others on the road that day! Thank you all for your good wishes.

Not necessarily so. About 12 years ago, someone removed ALL the lug nuts on the left rear of my Chevy 2500. I drove 2 1/2 miles and was doing 60 mph on I-94, when the wheel departed for parts unknown. It jumped a center cement barrier, dodged oncoming 5 PM traffic and disappeared, never to be seen again. I skidded to the shoulder and assesed the situation. All the lugs were intact, and since I was running empty, I borrowed 2 lugnuts from the other three wheels and mounted my spare. I then drove the remaining 50 miles home without further incident. That cold beer that I drank as soon as I got home, sure tasted good. Probably the best one that I ever had.

This is problem with heavy duty wheels (all wheels, actually, but more so with HD).

When a wheel is removed and replaced, it may not seat well at first, so even if fasteners are properly torqued some of them can, probably will, loosen within the first few hundred miles. This is a warning in the owner's manual for the chassis, you may even find the warning in the owner's manual for your passenger car.

My tire dealer makes sure to warn me to recheck lug nut torque, on the motorhome at least, or bring it back in after 50-300 miles for him to check. So does the guy at the alignment shop.

But dealers tend to fall down on this one. I've never had the service consultant (salesperson) at a car dealer tell me to recheck the wheel fasteners after xxx miles, although they almost always want to pull wheels off every time the car comes in, to get the 30 minute labor charge for a tire rotation.

Not usually true, Usually a few bolts stay tight enough to keep the wheel on but they can't take the load so they shear off with little if any warning. The other possibility is that they were over torgued causing them all to snap.

Glad everything turned out as well as it did. I am good about checking the tongue on the 5er lug nuts but did not think about checking the lugs on the truck. Thank you for informing the rest of us about how important it is to check the tongue. Not just trust the dealer. Have a great summer.

Happened to my daughter as well, though at a far lower speed.. Dealer made good there as well.

Almost happened to me on a trailer... What happened is I lost control, following that I decided to figure out why (I was not going that fast, no matter what my wife says) and found the wheel that was loose... Tightened them down. Minor damage (Dent) in the trailer is all.

Scary when it happens.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

What happened to you reminds me of a near-tragedy in our family years ago. I had leased a brand new Dodge Ram pickup 4x4 for our daughter to drive to college. She had been attending classes for a few weeks when she drove to her boyfriends' parents' home to visit. While there her boyfriend's Dad (who is a mechanic) noticed the front wheels were sitting at an "odd" angle so out of curiosity her crawled under the front end and discovered a couple of large bolts holding the front tires in place were barely still threaded in place. He immediately repaired the problem and called me to let me know what could have happened. I checked with the Dodge dealer where I leased the truck and he said it "must have been a factory error during manufacturing the vehicle." I took the truck in and they inspected the now tightened bolts and pronounced everything OK. I told him they were very lucky the wheels didn't come off while my daughter was driving or they would have been far from OK!

You're very lucky that "Loose Wheel" didn't hit somebody and kill them!!! That would have done a job on your insurance policy, if you had enough to cover it! It has happened.

@bobsally. General servicing and brake check for which they removed all wheels to check the brakes. My husband had manually checked the lugs. They were tight, just not torqued properly. It took 800kms for the wheels to drop off.

@wrvond. It's a Trac phone, pay as we go. We only need it for 6 days heading south and 6 days going north! We live in Baja for winter...no snow!!! LOL

Very few HDT use Budd Stud piloted Wheels these days! Most have Hub Piloted single lug Nut style wheels! (10 Nuts per wheel)!

Glad you are around to have a "lessons learned" session. However, as to the phone, you might check to ensure it's minutes carry over from one month to the next. Some expire whether you use them or not.
Having said that, any cell phone, as long as it is charged, will dial 911.
