Metal Detector owners

Went to the CG this week. While we were in the office, an older gentleman came in to check the lost and found. He had lost his wedding ring, pretty upset. The camp host took his name/address. She said that someone would come once in a while and use a metal detector to look for lost items. Someone else had lost a wedding ring in May. The host said that the metal detector guy had not been by this year, yet. If I had one, I would take it camping with us. Sounds like a good service, if anyone on the forum has one.

Headphones help block outside noise and hear faint targets but you don't have to have them. Any headphone with a 1/4 in jack would get you by if you wanted the.

NYS says anything over fifty years old on state property is an antiquity. Most state parks are built on land that has real or imagined historical significance.
There has been a lot of looting on civil war battlefields, and other significant sites, giving all detectorist a bad name.

I had a friend who made a little money with a detector on Daytona Beach. He always had a pocketful of rejected old coins , damaged or maybe half worn out , no value to a collector that my friend bought very cheaply . He walked along the beach and some ' mark ' would ask if he had found anything ? He would say I found this penny but its got an Indian on it ,but the guy at the pawn shop will give five bucks for it .The 'mark ' many times would say " I'll give ya five bucks for it . Carl sold ten or fifteen pennies every day plus he found all kinds of stuff .
If ya asked him what he did for a living he always said , coin dealer !

Some decent detectors under $300 are the Tesoro Silver uMax and Garrett Ace 250.

how about an indecent one? say about $150 or so. If I enjoy it I can always give it to my ggson and upgrade for myself.

Garrett ace 150 is around $150.

thanks I see it's about 153 at amazon, but do I also need to buy a headphone? the one web site questioned customer support? but the only one of 5 that they rated higher was $200. looks like that is the one I will buy.

I don't know if they are still available but about 20 years ago, there was a key chain fob that would beep when you whistled.

I guess I should have carried on a little longer.

While there may be inconsiderate a people with both metal detectors and dogs, I have used a metal detector to find bits of expensive boat hardware that disappeared into the gravel of a boat yard. While it would be hard to justify the expense for this only, those that I know that have such a past time are better off for the time outdoors.

OP here. Way more to this hobby than I thought. I understand that detecting may be a problem in historic areas, and inconsiderate people may leave holes. I posted because a gentleman lost his wedding ring in the same campground that we were at. He knew what areas that he had been in and figured his ring was just in the grass, (it was kind of tall). It was probably not even necessary to dig a hole to find this ring. Under these kinds of circumstances, a metal detector would have been very welcome.

I saw a sign at a state park campground in Kentucky last week that said you could not use metal detectors there.

Lots of people get a hit and dig and then leave the hole for someone else to deal with.

Matt

maybe you could combine the two. walk the dog, dig a hole, park the dog over hole, fill in hole.

Combine all three and get the dog to dig the hole.
