Microsoft Streets and Trips coming to end of life

I guess it's a sign of the times as people use on line trip planning tools but I hate seeing that Microsoft Streets and Trips is going to be discontinued: http://www.microsoft.com/Streets/en-us/default.aspx.

Yes, we have 2 little antenna pods (one for each tow vehicle) that have magnetic bottoms that adhere the about 2" X 2" yellow pod to the metal hood or fender. Looks like a Sirius Radio black antenna but is yellow. Extremely accurate. Even shows whether you are close to the centerline of a road or near the outside edge. Also give your speed to 1/100th of a mph if you want. Delorme is the mapping people who did and do the US Military mappings etc. Had mobile Delorme GPS vehicle imaging on our laptops since about 2001 or 2002.

Yes, you can get the GPS gizmo that works with Steet Atlas. It's their own GPS that connects via USB connection. It works okay if you have room for a laptop. A regular GPS works better IMO.

Does the Delorme have a GPS feature that works going down the road like S&T without internet access. If I have to replace S&T I would like something that functions on a PC because of the large display but I don't have reliable internet access going down the road. S&T will run stand alone but still has the GPS functional.

That's what I use also. It's amazing how much faster that program loads with each new computer I get.

Delorme Street Atlas is head and shoulders above Microsoft Streets and Trips. We have both and upgrade at each new release but seldom use the Microsoft Streets. Only get each new release of it because my wife likes it for some things but I don't like it at all. We have had every version of Delorme Street Atlas and also Topo since the first back in the 1990's. So easy to use and gives so much more local info and detail than Microsoft Streets. Now I will save money since I'll only have to upgrade the Delorme.

I've tried it and didn't care for the interface, but it's a shame that it's going away. I use Delorme Street Atlas and would really hate for that to disappear. Using a GPS or a smart phone app for trip planning would really suck. Google Earth would kind of work but pretty cumbersome, IMO anyway.

You know, I have a friend that is 34 years old. He started coming to my farm when he was 12. He wasn't around much in his 20's, he had moved over seas. Now he is back and comes out to the farm to do some painting for me. He has been here 5 times in the last 6 months and he still can't find his way out here without putting my address into the GPS thing in his car.

I sometimes wonder if we relay on technology too much.

That is a shame I like the program. It is a great tool for planning a trip. I have upgraded once, I think that I have 2010 now.

I stopped using mine when the software bugged out! sorry I wasted the $45! It wasn`t that good of a product anyway. I have an old Rand McNally Trip Maker that I got from Chrysler back in the early 2000`s. best trip maker/planner I have used. It may be out of date, But I still use it!

At least I have a copy of 2013 and can keep it and the POI's updated with POIFactory.

What a shame. It was and still is the best trip planning tool an RV'er could have. It was also a great Geographic resource.

That alone made it priceless. The next best thing to a paper map.
There could come a day when the net will go down for a week or more and the whole world will come to a skeeching halt.

It's probably not going to be a real big deal to me because it's only one resource for my trip planning. I really like it's drivetime zone function and I haven't seen anything quite like it in Google maps or Bing. However, as long as I have the program that function will still be available to me.

The other use is for trip planning when we are off the grid. It's helpful when putting together the next move when we don't have internet.

It's still my go-to program for trip planning., looking at alternate routes, etc.

Oh well, " progress" I suppose. I have the disk so for me, it all still works.
