Onan generator 4000 - stopped when turn on microwave/AC

Hi there,

I am a second owner of a Winnie Minnie 24 feet. The Onan Microquite 4000 generator has about 1500 hrs when I bought it. The generator worked fine a month ago until today. It started and ran smoothly but stopped a minutes after I turned on the microwave or the AC. I was able to use other appliances that require less than 1000 watts (coffee maker, electric kettle work fine).

The microwave and the generator work fine when connected to shore power.

I am new to RV generators and I don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions ?

thanks

Thanks all for your replies. I took your advice and let the generator run for an hour with only the frig running. Then I started the microwave and it continued to run fine. I guess it hasn't been used for awhile.

I am sorry. It is a Onan Microquite 4000 model (K series). I am new to this but I will read the manual to learn about flash codes.

Would help if you'd tell us what type of Onan... Microlite or Emerald? Also is it new enough to flash trouble codes?

For help from the 'real' Onan techs, you need to state the complete model # & spec letter, and probably ask the mods to move your thread to the 'tech' forum. Some there are really helpful, but won't waste their time responding without the model & spec.

I know it's a PIA, but because or rig sits all winter and because any small engines(like a genny)are very sensitive to ethanol I always add Stabil to the gas when I fill up. Stabil might help when running the genny as mentioned above.

Hi,

It is my guess that fuel problems are the problem. Your generator might have a gummed up carburetor, and that is the cause. Run it some more, and put a 1000 watt load on it as much as you can. Monitor the voltage. While the coffee maker and electric heater can run fine with 100 volts, the A/C can not.

Run a electric heater that has a high and low heat setting, and switch to low heat when the engine bogs down, then back to high when you can. Running a couple of gallons of fuel through the generator should clear up this situation.

You might also need new fuel in the RV if you have not taken it on any long trips. My suggestion is to try getting it as close to empty as practical (don't start out across the desert with only 1/8 thank though) and plan on finding fuel along the way to wherever you are going, getting to the last practical fuel stop along the way, then buy about 10 - 15 gallons, and that will give you a mixture of only 10% old stuff to 90% new stuff. Using up as much of that mixed old fuel as possible, then filling completely with new fuel should give you a "New" tank of fuel, that will not be causing problems that can be blamed on old fuel.

Also remember that your generator takes fuel from only the top 3/4 of the tank of fuel, so will run out before the gauge reads in the 1/4 to 1/8 full range. So you will have to fill to at least 1/2 tank if you plan on dry camping.

If you can get to the carburetor, and know how to remove the air filter, you can try running it and spray in some carb cleaner. You will need to keep a load on the generator, such as a 750 watt electric heater, to keep the engine running more than 20% open throttle. Spray it in slowly, in short bursts, because it is designed and the nozzle sixed for a much larger engine in the 50+ HP range, not the 8 HP engine on your generator. At only a 750 watt load, the generator will only need to make about 4 HP to keep running.

Also check your air altitude valve. It should be set to near your current altitude, mine has something like a 1,000, 3,000 and 6,000 foot setting. I set it for about 3,000 and leave it there, due to air restrictions in the air filter making it "Feel" like the generator is running a slightly higher elevation that it normally is.

Hopefully it will start working after running it a couple of hours at as close to full load as you can get it with a electric heater, tea kettle, ect. You can also cycle all those off at the same time as starting the A/C and see if that works. The engine will already be at 50% throttle with the tea kettle and 1500W heater, then drop off at the same time as you start the A/C, it should work.
