Pull over!

While towing through a busy town yesterday a gal in the car next to me waved at me and pointed to the rear of my 5er. Ok, so I better pull over and see what's up.

After a few scary minutes I got to a parking lot. I was expecting to see a wheel missing or my air conditioner gone, but I saw nothing wrong. Tires all fine, nothing hanging from the chassis, ladder present, roof fine, nothing missing from the truck. I have no idea what this was about. I guess I should have rolled down the window to hear her, but on a busy narrow bridge that's not something I want to do.

I can't imagine somebody doing this as a prank, but it sure appears that way. Anybody have this happen to you?

Seems to me like the brake lights ought to be lit when the vehicle is slowing significantly. This is probably a case of outdated vehicle code. Why would you want to slow in front of others without warning them?

Why do tailgaters follow so close that it would be a problem? If a filament burns out of the brake/turn signal light, should you be slammed in the rear?

Youโ€™re joking now, right? You think brake lights are only for tailgaters? Thereโ€™s also 3 lights so no problem if one is burned out.

Brake lights exist for a very good reason and in my opinion aggressive ehaxust brakes should light them. Relying on the depth perception of the driver following you to determine your tailgate is rapidly approaching his grill is asking for it.

Very good point, Lynnmor. There is no need for brake lights at all. No one should be following so close that they are necessary.

I then clued in and realized that I had not used the service brakes at all in the stop and go traffic and had only used the exhaust brake on full mode. It works very well on the Cummins/6 speed manual combo! :B

I have the 6.7 Cummins with the integrated brake, and yes it works very well, even with the automatic! I'm still waiting for an RCMP officer to pull me over and attempt to ticket me for no brake lights after descending hill (15lbs of "boost" in 4th locked, and us hanging off the seatbelts). :W

We were on our way home with the Lance Cabover, had a guy honking and yelling at us, we pulled over right away but could not see anything wrong, we checked every thing we could think of and came up with nothing.
I told the wife we will go on, keeping an eye on things the best we can, just take it easy and see how it goes.... couple miles down the road I could see the back door was swinging open, I could see it in the shadow on the road. Secured the door with the dead bolt and off we went. The rear observation camera picked a heck of a time to quit working on that trip, had it been working we would have seen the door opening right away.

Often done by criminals wanting to steal your vehicle. Happened to my sister in Mexico a few years ago. Fortunately there was a Federale close by who stopped the thieves.

Never stop where you are. Always pull into a lighted area near other vehicles. I prefer truck stops or shopping center lots where there's plenty of overhead lights. Plus my old truck had halogen cargo light bar that could light up Kennedy Center.

Replaced 30a fuse. Backed truck up to trailer, plugged in, no lights. Mfr says there are fuses on top of battery. I'll look there next. This is not fair.. I can't go anywhere (legally, or at night) until this is fixed.

Guess I'll put 12v on the trailer plug and see what's up there.

SOLVED: Just like sportchassis said, check fuses on top of battery. One was dead. I jumped that fuse and now getting power. Cool.

Excellent. Hopefully you don't have an underlying issue that caused the fuse to blow in the first place.

Minot north Dakota we were just pulling out onto freeway towing 27 foot TT. old farmer pulls up beside us and points at the trailer. we pull off right away and I go back and look. driver side wheel on the back axle is leaning so I jack it up and the wheel, brake drum, bearing and all fall off on the ground. I take a deep breath and thank God and that old farmer.
I always will stop and look, if someone is playing a stupid joke oh well is cost me a few minutes but if it's for real it may save your and others life.

Sportchassis told me the fuse box is in a storage compartment - thank goodness it wasn't mounted to the chassis like the manual says.

Found 1 blown fuse. Headed to store.

Well at least now you know. I would start by checking grounds and the trailer umbilical cord.

Just the other day while driving on the interstate I passed a motorhome and upon looking in my mirror saw that the steps were extended. I tried to get the driverโ€™s attention but no dice. Oh well.
