Refrigerator temp

We are planning to take the ferry to/from Newfoundland/Nova Scotia and were debating which route to take, 7 hours or 14 hours. Our question is how long will the refrigerator/freezer retain adequate temps if we add ice? Propane has to be turned off and our refrigerator does not work on 12V.

If you are worried about it...

Freeze some of those freezer paks, the kind you put in coolers - the bigger the better, and put them in the FRIDGE and freezer to keep all of it colder.

Put some ice cubes in a plastic container and set in the freezer, if the ice cubes are not square (or are floating in water), even if they refreeze, depending on whether they melted completely or just a bit, you'll know things got too warm.

We've done both the 6-7 hour and the 14 hour ferries (twice). Since the fridge is not opened during the crossing the temperature inside the fridge does not rise enough to worry about the increased temperature inside. For the longer trip just turn off the propane when you see you're about to board and turn it back on as soon as you are back on terra firma. It's also colder in the hold of the ship as you cross, so the food will be fine.
