Skid Wheels

Having real difficulties getting my trailer out of my driveway. Don't ask how it got in there. I am interested in putting skid wheels on back bumper tubing. I feel these would do the trick. However - I have a 4-1/2" square bumper. I would like to uses U bolts to do a simple install on the tubing. However - I am seeing smaller tubing sizes out there than mine. Any recommendations where to buy with my tubing size? This is a 1989 trailer - which may explain the larger tubing? Hoping to go camping in a week. Stuck in driveway.

Oh! Yes...mine is adjustable. But I am as low as possible. But.....if I pull my hitch off (which I must use because it has the hooks for the trunnion bars for WD) - and swap with one that goes lower until I am out on the road? Hmmmmmmmm.....that may work?

Keep in mind these pics were taken BEFORE I lowered the hitch a few notches to bring the tongue down. Now its pretty even. It is on lowest possible notch as well.

On the same line of thought: I have an old WDH where the spring bars have egged out the hitch head. I now have that old hitch set up for a lower trailer that does not need weight distribution. Using an adjustable height hitch to get your trailer out of the driveway before using your WDH for the actual trip would give you even more clearance.

Hawkeye! You may have the solution! I do have a weight WDH. It also has saddles for bars ala 89. So its pretty rigid. The thought did occur to me to remove them. I am sold. I will give a shot tomorrow after work. Thanks!!!!

Maybe you should consider renting a skid-loader and altering the configuration of your driveway. I know that sounds like a lot more work, but you will solve the issue and not have to alter the dynamics of your TT.

I would not put on the bumper, maybe the frame. A ramp sounds like a better idea. 🙂

Flipping the axles is your best bet.

We put skid wheels on frame on a previous TT. A couple issues you need to consider (beside the bumper strength and twisting issues previously mentioned) are 1) Skid wheels reduce the already low clearance and even more importantly 2) Rear end of TT swings left/right a fair amount while turning up a driveway, skid wheels on straight axles don't. You probably already thought about #1, be I hadn't thought about #2 until I tried it and watched the wheels scraping sideways. An interesting idea that I tried once and abandoned.
