Soda Crate Moral Dilemma (& Informal Survey)

I have a moral dilemma and will go along with whatever the majority reply.

Last week went to the Big City (2 hour drive). Heading back home got a flat on the interstate. While putting on the spare saw what I thought was a milk crate in the ditch. Turned out to be a carry crate for soda (I think 2 liter bottles, not sure, we don't drink the stuff). The name brand is molded into the crate. It's the perfect size & height for the RV's "first step" - something DW & I could very much use.

Hence the dilemma.

Do I keep it?

Do I give it to the soda distributor in the nearby city - who couldn't possibly have lost it?

Do I wait to bring it to the Big City distributor who I assume most likely lost it? Making a special trip to the Big City just for this isn't an option.

I wonder how many people were getting paid to do a job while typing their response to this moral dilemma?
That could turn into a really worthwhile "discussion" as opposed to this one.
It's a freaking soda crate people!

Oh, now that is an entirely different dilemma. When someone puts something in a recycling bin, they are disposing of it. HOWEVER, whoever owns the bin gets money for the recycling.

I know where I live there had been a fight about the city recycling. We put it out on the road on garbage day and they pick it up. However, many people go through all the bins and take out the bottles and cans that are worth decent cash back, so the city was losing their income. They never found a solution to stop the bin pickers so just get less money for the effort.

I found an Iphone in bathroom at Starbucks once,
Did turn it in at the counter..

Crate cost about a dime to make,,no one would go broke if you kept it

Keep it. They don't want it back. They never even knew that they lost it. If you had not picked it up it would have just ended up in the landfill.

The majority decision of a group does not establish morals. Morals are absolute and individuals and groups wrestle with them.

BTW while on several cross country camping trips I lost a bunch of pocket change along the way....if anyone finds any change with the words "In God We Trust" imprinted on them will they please send them to me.

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone dares drink soda anymore. The number of chemicals found in any of the typical soft drinks is staggering. Everytime I see someone drink soda, all I see is someone pouring a bottle of cancer and diabetes down their throat.

Regarding the crate, though, I have a simple solution. Being a businessman, we used to have random vendors send us misc supplies like safety glasses, safety vests, ink/toner, odd-ball office supplies (doesn't happen so much anymore). They'd never include any information as to where it came from or who ordered it. Sometime later, we'd get an invoice from a company noting the materials that were delivered and the amount due. We never paid those invoices because we didn't order it in the first place. Then they'd start calling our office and threaten liens and whatever else because the invoices were past due. So what we always did...and what would work here as well...we'd send them a fax/email telling them to provide us with a shipping label and we'd return it, or they could come pick it up. And if they chose not to, we'd consider it a free gift and maintain possession. In the end, nothing ever happened.

The OP is probably a customer of the local soda distributer. What ever happened to "the customer is always right"?

Make an executive-customer decision that the crate is of such low value that it's just not worth doing anything with, and keep it.

And yet......we just keep on typing :W

I haven't read the whole thread, so not sure if this has been said.

I would contact the company and tell them what you found. Let them decide if they want to send someone to come get it. In business, sometimes it cost more in "man hours" than what it is worth.

If they choose not to come get it then I would keep and use it.

If you don't know your own morals, and feel the need to follow 'the majority', or seek consensus on what you should do, then I would submit to you that your morals have no grounding or basis. Lemmings all end up in the same place, not knowing how they got there.

I'll not engage into what I would or would not do. I know what I would do, and need neither approval or validation of difference between right and wrong from anyone.

I do find this thread quite interesting and humorous. I especially like WRVPO's dilemma.

It's easy to find a Coke or Pepsi distributor. Just drop off the crate at a small-town store that sells soda and they will probably hold it for the truck driver. ๐Ÿ™‚

Finding a single-use paper cup from McDonald's is different than finding an item like milk crate or 2-liter crate designed for repeated use.

I'm sure your comment was tongue in cheek (or I hope it was...) but you know that Timothy McVeigh was stopped for a simple traffic violation, turns out he committed the worst act of terrorism to hit the US at the time.

From reading the attached story, sounds like the arrestee was a career criminal and it is in the best interest of the jurisdiction if he is behind bars as much as possible.

No I absolutely was not tongue in cheek. if the local PD has sufficient personnel to "profile" individuals out for an evening ride they have excessive officers. If that would have been the mayor's kid I think they would have told him to drop it off at 7-11, but since they had profiled this citizen a different outcome/arrest/charges were filed.
and somehow linking to Mr. McVeigh is ludicrous at best. they stopped him for a simple violation. did that prevent the disaster? NO
