Too much fun in Tombstone...

Never expected to get a site over the weekend especially with Tombstone celebrating their Wild West Days weekend, probably the biggest party of the year. Thought what the heck, asking is free and called the Tombstone RV Park and amazingly enough they had a 40' pull through that was open for a week. We drove up on Thursday morning and returned early this afternoon.

This was our first visit and the park was great which many of our neighbors attributed to the change in ownership about 18 months ago. Nicest bunch of folks you could ever want to meet. The park is gravel and since I was towing our 862# Indian motorcycle that was about as close to a complaint as I could get {gravel and heavy motorcycles often do not play well together}.

Very nice amenities, full hookups set us back $36 a night with the GS 10 percent discount. They keep the pool heated to 85 year round but it was too cold out for us old folks to enjoy. If you want a campfire not only will they sell you wood at a good price they will deliver it to your site. I had wood but was expecting a fire ring and none were to be seen. They use old washing machine drums for firepits and they work great! They delivered the drum to our site {no charge} and we had a roaring fire all three nights. Even when it gets windy and it often does, you can still have a fire as the sparks and embers are contained by the drum.

Here is our fire from last night:

Another nice feature is their free shuttle into town about a mile or so up the road. We tipped our driver a couple of bucks coming and going and the convenience was awesome. Tombstone was in full reenactment mode with dozens of costumed cowboys and their ladies and lots of silliness and world class people watching.

Got in a couple of great motorcycle rides, the first down to Bisbee which is an incredible old mining town just 27 miles up the road. Spent a couple of hours touring the town including the mining museum which is a must see. Rode out to Willcox the next day and tried a visit to Apple Annies, another must see but they were closed for the season but we will be back.

It was a great trip and we look forward to returning soon, it is only 96 miles from our driveway and the ride takes you through some very scenic /spectacular country and this time of year snow covered mountains can be seen in almost every direction.

Can't remember where we ate but got good food along the main strip there in Tombstone. We enjoyed everything but the Bird Cage Theatre is probably on of the best. Stage coach ride was nice. Enjoy!

We have tickets for one tour...might do both if time permits. It was easy to get reservations for a campsite, not too busy while kids are still in school. Weather is predicted to be nice, might even get a chance to run the AC for the first time this year.

I hope you take one or both of the Cave tours while at Kartchner. They will absolutely blow your mind. The history of the caves combined with the incredible technology they have in place to preserve them are awesome and not to be missed. The visitor center has some spectacular interactive displays that tease at what lies beneath but again I stress, take the tour{s}!

Outstanding..thanks for the quick response. We do plan to drive over to Bisbee for a look see. Before we do Tombstone we are staying two days a Kartchner Caverns. Looking forward to an uneventful trip on my brand new GY Endurance tires.....

Bisbee {just 25 miles southeast of Tombstone} is a must see, allow a couple of hours to wander around town and definitely go through the Mining Museum {right downtown}. Lots of restaurants to choose from all over town and they all looked good {but we packed our lunch} so I don't have a specific recommendation. Big Nose Kate's Saloon in the middle of Tombstone is a fun place to stop and the food is surprisingly good.

The weather is warming up nicely as spring has arrived, remember that the RV Park keeps their pool at a delightful; 85 degrees... don't forget your swimsuits. I recommend the washing machine drum fire rings they provide, for $7 it comes full of wood. Ask for a site on the west half of the park as you will be farther from the highway and road noise. enjoy!

We went by Wells Fargo a few times and I would never stay there. As you noted they really jam you in and lots of traffic all around the park. it is close to the downtown Tombstone silliness so I guess that is the draw.

Not only that, but the church across the street has a loud bell recording that they play every hour on Sunday starting pretty early.

If staying at Tombstone RV Park know that you will have a fair amount of road noise unless you are in the west half of the park. The restrooms, laundry etc were very clean.

Good to know the park has changed ownership and the new owners have turned it around. Friends stayed there a few years back and reported it was awful. The pool was green, smelly and unusable, there were problems with the utilities, and the bathrooms were dirty. Based on that I had crossed them off my list, but now I'll have to give it a try.

I've stayed at Wells Fargo in Tombstone which is right on Allen Street, and its a nice park but the sites are tiny. They really squeeze you in. This sounds much nicer.

Sounds like a super time! Thanks for the report.

Did you watch the movie "Tombstone" before you went? We watched "Key Largo" (again) before we went to the Keys.
