About 50% of RV's, actually all vehicles, are constructed of materials that are magnetically attracted to concrete. Just look at the marks on Jersey barriers in construction zones. On my long daily commutes on I 70 in SW PA, which is in a constant state of construction, I see at least 4 people per week scraping those barriers or using both lanes while going through them. Usually it's only tire smoke but hit them hard enough.....oh well. The lanes are in actuality just as wide as without the barriers yet some people can't seem to fathom it. It's just like the tunnels going into Pittsburgh. Most people need to slam on the brakes when entering for some reason.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?

If he wasn't awake before he hit I bet that he had a very "Rude Awakening". I seem to remember when I lived in San Leandro they had Truck and oversize lanes on all of the bridges in the bay area ?

yes.. 1 foot on each side
he had to be over 2ft away from the toll booth window

was he trying to drive up and open the drivers door
instead of using the window in the door to pay

That MH looks like a Winnebago Journey 39QD, circa 2002 and internet says the width is 8'-5.5". Should have cleared easy with over 2' to spare. Has to be simply a case of operator error. If a MH-er can't clear that, they shouldn't be driving one. Maybe this guy won't anyway after he shows his wife the repair bill, lol...

If you look closely at the photo I posted previously, "the man" has been edited in laying down across the lane twice. Even though he's slightly bent over, if he's still at least 5'3", that lane is easily 10'6" wide.

Here's a cropped version that might be clearer...

OK. Didn't notice that, Dutch. Thanks.

I agree it's deceiving in the original photo though, that's why I tried the edited version to see for myself.

If you look at the lane to the right, it appears that the guy standing there could lie down across the lane with little room to spare.

Wonder what math they used to come up with 10' 6" width.

I agree. Looking at the man, he appears to be around 6+ feet tall. Lying down across that "wide" lane, would make it some feet narrower than advertised.

.

I measured the mirrors on my new Motorhome. Each mirror sticks out 1' on either side. That would make my Motorhome 10.5' wide. Not sure if I would fit.

Went thru Houston several years back when there was road construction.
Dang highway department put those concrete blocks out to route traffic. Only thing was my MH did not fit between them. :R

Ok, let's put that wide lane in perspective. I don't know exactly how tall the worker is, but looking at this way, that 10'6" sure does seem to be pretty close. More than wide enough lane width to stuff an 8'6" RV through anyway...

As I understand it, some states have laws against personal vehicles (including RVs) wider than 96 inches on certain, or all, of their public roads. There may be reasons for this law, even though it doesn't seem to be enforced.

We sometimes have white knuckle situations on roads all over the U.S. when traveling in our short (24 foot) but wide - at 101 inches - Class C motorhome! I wish it was only 94-96 inches wide .... we wouldn't miss the reduced interior width.

Note that probably most big rig trucks are around 100 inches or so wide, hence their drivers have to deal with vehicle width issues all the time .... so it can be done.

Federal Highway statute is 104" overall width maximum. That applies anywhere and everywhere on any road that receives Federal highway funding.

Most tractor trailers today (trailers) are 102" outside. The 8'-96" wide units are a dinosaur.
