Water Filter

I am debating on getting a water filter for my travel trailer. The kind that you hook up to the hose outside of your camper. Does anyone have one and do they really work? Just wondering if its worth it or not to get it.

I started out buying distilled water in gallon jugs at grocery stores. I saved the jugs and fill them from home now, before I leave. Whatever's in my local water hasn't killed me yet. I use it for coffee and cooking. Also for cleaning my teeth - in a cup overnight with an Efferdent tablet. 🙂

The off the shelf camco, valterra, what have you in line filters are typically rated at 100 microns.

You can basically drive a bus through that.

We have a custom "water plant" we take camping the has 2 of 3 of the features we have at home (kinetico water conditioner is a bit large for our current camper :-).

First filter stage is a pentek EPC-1, 1 micron sediment filter followed by a bypassable Pentek DBC-10EX2, a 5 micron KDF/active carbon filter for taste and biologics.

Both elements housed in "big boy" housings rated for better than 7 GPM; no flow or pressure problems here.

This set up is able to stop all the acetone and junk in the water in FL when we travel there. It's damn impressive when you have a filtered glass of water and its like fresh from the well at home and then just smell an unfiltered glass, let alone drink it!

If you are not a DIY type, you can get the same thing from the rv water store; talk to Rick, he's very knowledgable...

I triple filter the water. First I have a Camco external filter. When the water enters the trailer, it gets filtered again by a PUR filter which is attached to the faucet. Then, it is filtered again by Brita before it goes into the pitcher.

Over doing it? Possibly. But it is safer to be safe than sorry.

I may try the Camco one. I just don't want the water flow/pressure to be reduced.

We have used the blue Camco inline filter on the hose for a number of years with no problems. Has a good flow rate and filters out a lot of "stuff". Walmart sells them for about $18.

I don't trust bottled water from unknown sources, so we filter the water from the regularly tested campground supplies to top off our fresh tank as needed. Our primary filtering is for sediment and chlorine taste removal, with secondary point of use drinking water filtering for lead, microbiological cysts, pharmaceutical traces, etc. The primary filter is a whole house housing with a Culligan D-20a filter rated for 1,000 gallons or one year, and our secondary filter is a PUR faucet mounted cartridge model rated for 100 gallons. Flow rate is not normally a concern for us, since we typically fill the tank and then run off the onboard pump for consistent pressure.

I have a whole house carbon filter and I see no difference in water pressure. I change it at the beginning of every season. It works well for taking the nasty taste out of some water.

I have seen this type of water filter installed inline with the trailer water connection laying on the ground couple of times at a camp ground..

Haven't had any dealings with either one of these.

We don't drink or cook with any of the city water stored in the fresh water water tanks. ALways Bring along bottled water for that...

They don't reduce presure but they can reduce flow this is why you buy one made for 3/4" pipe.

They do reduce the water pressure. We bought our whole house Culligan filter housing from Amazon $15 & installed hose fittings for $10. You can buy the same filter housing. at Walmart or RV supply for $50. BTW Amazon sells 5 micron or charcol filters for couple bucks each. JMHO.

How long do the filters usually last? And does it reduce your water pressure?

Filters are available for all kinds of pproblems. Get the one that takes care of the problem you have. We use the type with two canisters and filters for particals and taste.. Check with a good RV supply for what you need.
