Found this in a friend's travel trailer. There are two holes on the side of the trailer a few inches below the awning which line up with holes in the assembly. We are trying to find out what it is.

Yep awning support for the middle of the awning. I put one on my 21ft awning. It used to collect water when rolled up and would sag a bit in the middle.

I have something similar on the end of awning support arm by roller.
You have to pull them out so rafter arm can slide down when stowing awning

I agree with a center support bracket.
