Will this get me thrown in jail?

Here in Texas, if an open container is behind the driver/passenger seat in a motorhome, taxi, limo, or hearse, it is legal. However, reading the California laws, it says that an open container (such as an unsealed bottle of vodka in the freezer) is illegal regardless of where it is located in a vehicle.

Is this a major issue where opened bottles should get tossed, or is this more of "don't ask, don't tell"?

I know this is a dumb question... but I'd rather feel dumb here, than feel dumb in front of a CHP officer or a judge.

Yeesh, I didn't intend to turn this into a cop bashing thread. I mainly wanted to make sure about some oddball inconsistancy on a forum as opposed to having to deal with it on some part of I-10, or California court.

Different states have different vehicle laws. Texas has the "move over or slow down" law where if a police car is pulled over with the lights on, if traffic doesn't go 20 miles under the posted limit in the right lane, it can be a $2000 fine. It is always good to ask and check around. One surprise that I found in CA by reading is that they disallow right turns on red and U-turns. Here in Texas, they are allowed, so it is always good to find that info out firsthand. Ignorance isn't an excuse.

Just what are you reading? You keep getting some really bad info. Right turns are allowed on a red. Must stop first and be safe to do so but is allowed. U-turns are allowed unless posted that it is not.

In MN they have the Move Over law. I've never hard of the Slow Down part though now that you mention it I'll do it here too. Doesn't sound like a bad idea and it may be a law I didn't hear about. I don't think the fine is $2000 dollars though.

Speaking of right on red after stop, in GA at least, you can turn left on red after stop IF you are in the far left lane of a one way street and turn onto another one way street that flows to your to left.

That's good. You never would have passed Constitutional Law class.

The supreme court has ruled on recording public officials in public.

Would you provide the cite for that? It must have just come down today. I've been busy today and haven't had a chance to catch up on the latest rulings.

How times have changed.

Off topic a bit... but years ago when I lived in Louisiana... Not only could you have an open container... The driver could legally drink and drive. We actually had drive thru bars. One was called the Daquari Factory. They made specialty alcoholic drinks of all kinds... The booze version of todays Starbucks.

In California, unless it's posted otherwise, you MAY make a right turn on a red light. U-turns are allowed at intersections unless posted otherwise.

Might have to do with the fact that I treated them with respect, didn't get an attitude and accepted the fact that I was in the wrong and had been caught.

X2, those men/women have a tough job and I don't want to make it harder. Always been treated fairly and promptly ticketed. My bad.

I had one apologize profusely - at least 20 times in a 10 minute span - I felt a bit sorry for him. He had gotten the job of policing a stretch of road where folks were always speeding (me included) and I'm sure by the time he stopped me, that he had spent several hours of attitude. I told him no apology necessary, I was speeding and he caught me. He did seem surprised that I wasn't upset with him.
