We love the breed, smart, trainable and lovely to look at. Having standard poodles for the past fourty years we always joke they are like dobermans with hair. The good thing with standards is when they ask what kind of dogs we have, we say poodles. They smile and say that's fine.
Dobermans also seemed to be going through a lot of health issues. They do not have the longest life expectancy. Saying that, find a good breeder that does all of the health testing. They make fantastic, loyal pets.
My wife has joked with me saying we should cross them with a standard poodle and call them doberdoddles.

Given a choice I would get something else that's much smaller because if you stay at private CG's you will have endless problems.
I have a mini Schnauzer now. Always liked the look of a Doberman and have done alot of reading on them. My niece works for me and she lives at the business here. She has a 7 year old German Shepard that is nasty. If you turn your back on it it nips you. She also has a two year old Pit Bull that is the biggest baby. This dog can't stop licking you. I really think it has a Problem.

Dobies get a bad rap. As far as staying in campgrounds you will have problems. I once acquired a half dobie thinking he would be a good watch dog. Naa; all he wanted was to give love and be loved. They are extremely smart and react well to training.

Raised and showed Dobermans for years. Great dogs but "the bear II" is correct. Many place will not let you in with them. I have a 100Lb Pit Bull lap dog that has to stay home most of the time since most places know he's "a time bomb waiting to explode" :).
