Advice on 30 amp Install at Home

Our electrician will be coming soon for needed work, and while here I want to add 30 amp service so kids can use it when visiting and have more power available than what I have now, which is using an adapter and standard residential duplex receptacle. He's excellent but does residential and commercial work, not RV stuff. I've read here and elsewhere about problems arising due to the differences in RV wiring. He won't be touching the RV itself, but still, is there anything he should know now that might otherwise catch him by surprise and cause trouble when I plug the power cord into the new receptacle?

When I installed a power pedestal for my 30 amp RV, I put in a 50 amp breaker, 6g wire (about a 35 foot run) and a power box like this one: 50/30/20amp box. I can plug in tools to work there, the RV itself, and if I ever upgrade to a 50 amp unit, I won't have to re-do the power.

Just throwing this out there - but you do realize 30 amp service (3600 watts) is 120 vac across a single leg while so-called "50 amp service" is really 100 amps (12,000 watts) across two legs @ 50 amps per leg? Do you therefore know for a fact your house breaker box as it's currently configured has the capacity to provide this service? :@

After pos ting I realized I should probably go 50 amp so it's ready for our next RV. This for our own TT that guests can use as a guest house. Glad I didn't already order the TT30. It's really more for me than them - I like my privacy in the wee hours. And I did catch the one post that would have it wired for a dryer, 220. No problem there, it'll be 120.
Install both if you like but I cannot imagine spending money just to use an adapter.
Your home, your call.

If the OP expects his next RV to have 50 amp service, why not put it in now, rather than needing to rewire or use an adapter later? Ideally, he could wire for both 30 and 50, but that would add more expense than a simple adapter from Walmart.

I bought my 30A (120V RV type) outlet from Amazon:

I used 10 gauge wire. The house breaker panel was on the other side of this same wall. I added a 30A breaker to an open slot.

I purchased a similar 30A box. I ordered mine with a 30A breaker in the box also. It makes it handy to plug/unplug, with the power off, by having the extra breaker right in the box.

Bump (so I can find this thread easily.)

I'll be wiring up an RV outlet shortly, so thanks to the OP, and responders.

Since the OP has decided to go with a 50 amp hookup, presumably his electrician will know to wire it exactly the same as he would for a 50 amp 120/240 VAC kitchen range outlet.

X2. Just make sure he wires it like the outlets in your house; one hot, one neutral, and one ground. We've seen too many of those wired up for 220v so make sure he understands it's 120 volt.

I was referring to a 30A dryer recep, not 50A. This is a 30A thread.

More than a few residential electricians hear 30A RV and wire up a 30A 220 three prong recep like many welders use.

I agree a 220 volt 50A dryer recep and rv recep are wired the same.

If he is a residential electrician he won't have any problems. Basically all he will be doing is adding a receptacle just like is ran for your clothes dryer except possibly in some sort of weatherproof enclosure depending on your mounting location . I picked mine up at Home Depot for around $25-$30 for enclosure and receptacle together.

This is exactly wrong. That is the mistake that residential sparkies make that burn up RV stuff.
It is NOT the same as a dryer, it's 120, not 220 but it looks like a 220 volt 30a recep.

Wrong wrong wrong, A dryer is 220 a dryer and TT. plug are slightly different. But the major difference is 120 volts vs. 220 volts

Many electricians have messed this up. Check carefully.

A perfectly ok cheat is to wire in a 50 recep with 30a rated wiring and breakers. It is very very hard to draw more than 30A per leg and it saves a lot if $$ on wire size.
The worst you do is you blow a breaker..

If you go 50 amp, it will be 240 volts. If you go 30 amp, it will be 120 volts. That is how it is supposed to be.
