Filter for Converter

I have a 2003 Magnetec 6345 converter inour RV. I measured around 6 volts of AC voltage riding on the 12.8 DC voltage in the trailer. Is there a cheap, easy way to add filter caps to this converter, or would it be better to just replace it all together?

Throw out the old boat anchor that causes all kinds of problems and install a modern high quality multi stage converter! You will wonder why you never did it sooner. Money well spent!!

If you only ever RV with shore power, just live with the 6300. No point in replacing it with a 7300 that does not need a battery as filter. Just make sure you have a battery, which you need anyway for going down the road, to operate the break-away brakes system.

If you buy a 7300 it will cost as much as a better-optioned 3-stage converter. One of the replacements is an Ultra 111 , which is a WFCO, which many here have had no luck with getting it to do all three stages. Stay away.

Best bet is one of the "lower portion" replacements by PowerMax or PD. Or you could get an Iota deck mount. Parallax has a whole newer line of converters that have several good features, but they tend to cost more than most.

No sense paying for features you will not use.

You will be very sorry if you put that converter in. It's only slightly better in that it can provide its full rated current to the battery but it's still a dumb charger.
It wont cost any more to put a good converter in. Contact Bestconverter.com for details on a decent model and how to installit (easy).

Kennedy,

Is the 6345 RU a three stage converter? If not, don't buy it.

I called Parallax, and talked to an engineer there. He said 6 VAC on the output was normal for that unit, and suggested to replace the converter with a 6345 RU. That is what I think I will do. Thanks for the reply's. Happy Camping.

The best filter you can have is the battery hooked up to it.
But even that wont do much for that converter. Before you spend a dime trying to correct the output you should just scrap it and get a modern 3 stage converter.

I often state that if you have a Magnetek 6300 series EVEN IF IT IS BRAND NEW and just installed .... You should upgrade

I recomment the Progressive Dynamics 4600 series, I think they do make a 4645, from Best Converters (or best converter, one is an audio store, the other RV store) you need to add one jumper wire.

The Magnetek 6300 is a feroresonnant converter, no voltage regulation to speak of, it is widly known as a battery killer and rellly needs an upgrade. It also does not work withotu a battery.

The lights, water pump and loads of that type do not mind unfiltered DC, radios and thigns that need FILTERED DC hook to the battery side of the converter and the Battery acts as a filter.... So you do not need a filter, Just a battery, and you will need a new battery often with that convwerter.

So Upgrade. 2 batteries = a Progressive Dynamics 4600 and change, lots of change.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

It probably is pulsed DC and not AC. Impossible to tell the difference with most meters.

But the overwhelming opinion is that the Magnetec should be changed out for a 3 stage (at least).

Please clarify if you are talking about something else besides the design of the 6300 where it has the split DC output, part of which needs the battery connected to act as the filter for DC going to sensitive items like the monitor panel.

That 6300 filtering by the battery is normal so not a problem. (The 7300 is the newer technology that means converters no longer need a battery to filter their DC)

If it is a different filtering issue from that normal 6300 one, somebody else will have to help here.

I'd suggest to replace it all-together. Most of those Magnetek converters were a single stage operation so will boil out a battery if not watched closely.

Also, if you have 6VAC riding on the DC output, chances are that the converter is now failing or will fairly soon.
