Had a strange call from "Microsoft"

Watch out for this one!

This morning I received a call from someone with a strong East Indian accent, who claimed he was from Microsoft and he claimed that I had a problem with my computer.

After answering several of his questions, he directed me to a website that the technical department of Microsoft would use to diagnose what my problem was and correct that problem for me.

The website is www.ammyy.com and that turned out to be a remote access software site.

Needless to say I closed the conversation and hungup.

Sadly he's wrong, it's more like every 30 seconds.

We got that call. My wife told the guy on the phone I work in IT and she would put me on the phone. He promptly hung up.

Would have been even SAFER if you'd never had the conversation with him. MS is NEVER going to call anyone about a computer problem.

They got the lady a couple of doors up for us for $300 on her credit card. They also gained access to her computer so that they could "fix the problem with her Windows software." They call us all the time. I've taken to telling them that I have an Apple which doesn't use Windows. That always seems to confuse them. I told the one guy that my abacus wasn't even connected to the internet. For some reason he hung up on me before even offering to help me out!!!!

They use the Ammyy site to get you to install Ammyy's remote access product on your computer, then access your computer to install malware or spyware. The Ammyy site is not hostile by itself.

Because somone not as knowledgable as you are might click on it, and who knows what kind of pipeline that might open to their computer.

I agree with the suggestion to remove it- why post a live link that you know to be "hostile"?

I received the same call a couple months back......As soon as she said she was with MS and I had a problem, I hung up.......MS will not contact you for any reason.

Simple solution. I don't answer my phone unless I know who is calling. If it is important they will leave a message.

I don't even answer the phone if I don't know the caller. I figure if it's something important, they will leave a voice mail message.

I received a few calls like this around 6 months ago. I like to play around with them and waste their time before I call them a ... hole and hang up.

I have gotten that call 3-4 times. I just laugh and hand up.
The first time they called I almost bought it, but it just didn't seem right, why would Microsoft be calling ME?
