Everybody dreads it. Problems waiting in line. Here it goes...

  • Entered the line at noon. Advanced 200 meters in a half hour
  • Looked at temperature gauge "H"
  • Steering heavy lost a belt
  • Start engine advance shut off engine:Restart
  • 200 yds temp advanced to full"H"
  • Steam coming out from under hood
  • Fast customs check inspector sympathized
  • Remembered an O'Reilleys auto parts store San Ysidro Blvd. Close by
  • Drove up to door shut off engine raised hood. Sure as shootin' the serpentine belt was thrown but not broken
  • Flopping belt snagged radiator electric fan wires, pulled them loose shorted breakers and fuse
  • No tools El Screwed
  • Mexican man offers to help for a price. Local mechnic wanted $75 just to show up three hours later
  • Had serpentine belt tool in trunk but no 15mm socket. First purchase $6 chinese socket
  • Mexican man utterly lost with belt routing
  • Checked glove box. Gabriรฉl who R&R'd alt for my reman job did not replace diagram in glove box
  • Come to find out all bolts and nuts on alt were finger tight. Tilted alt, threw belt
  • Belt route a nightmare
  • My Galaxy no workee in USA
  • Borrow galaxy from auto parts employee
  • Got diagram
  • Hard headed $30 helper refused to follow diagram
  • Spent 4 hours getting belt back on
  • Plus repairing wiring
  • The term frustrating day does not measure up.

"We have to search your car".

Inside was the usual "grand pirate hidden booty" of space shuttle KYNAR KAPTON shielded duplex wire, thousands of wire terminals, twenty two LED fixtures, a ninety dollar toddler walk around thingee, 500 watt CREE and a 180 watt CREE light bar.

He approached the car then skidded to a stop twenty feet away. The 'scarred and rust spotted Doodge Espirit is oogly. Inside was a 5 gallon Home Depot orange bucket. Fit for Jed Clamppett, or Barney Google. All carefully piled atop the real treasures of my RV handiwork.

"Uhhh just show me what you want to declare"

I did. I paid 207 pesos import tax ($10.51) and now finally my son-in-law can get a 200 dollar dive lantern plus 200 dollars (18) NiMH low loss C batteries, a 180 watt CREE light bar and CREE 18 watt fixtures for his 24' open skiff.

I could not wait to come home. Americanos are friendly but speaking INGLES 6 days a year I make grammatical mistakes by the ton. I write acceptable English but my tongue rebels shamelessly. It puts the girls at the desk at Motel 6 on the floor. "OK OK she says - lets speak Spanish" I am so ashamed.

I got the 27" View Sonic monitor. But the replacement laptop battery charges to 20% capacity then the laptop stops charging then stays there even plugged in with the symbol showing, so my fight with smart battery management continues.

Re: All those MEGAWATT articles....I passed the baton to a fellow TECH forum member here (greatly respected) and hopefully he can unsnarl the mysteries of how to upload and post pictures and text from a MS Word to Gmail transmission. My computereeze is buggy whip. The horse is smarter than the driver, there.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I am spending maรฑana with Mexican friends here in Ensenada then Sunday on to El Rosario, and many hours and many CREE lights for the Fire Engines and Ambulances there, my small contribution to a free public service. Halcones del Desierto DESERT HAWKS. A non profit organization run bu the owner of the only Pemex gasolinera in Baja California that has truly accurate dispensers. Antonio Muรฑoz. Since I have Star of Life ambulance electrical repair credentials, they love my donations and I love the fact they service 115 miles south into the wilds of the Baja Peninsula.

The job is to put my incredibly bright CREE LED red strobe lights system on the ambulance and CREE scene lighting on the pumper fire engine. I'll have 2 sharp helpers. The real reward is to the heart. It makes me feel like I'm worth something. Check out

That is a hard day. I wish I could have been in line with you to help.
I think you will be double checking all the work done by others in the future.
The good mechanics are too far and few between these days. Any worth a salt does not need a diagram.

May your next travel go a little easier.

I'm telling you his lips are as good as gone.

A three hour wait for a mobile mechanic who would have screwed up the wire fix. As distasteful as it was, I was steered along the least evil path.

For a mechanic to make a procedural mistake is disturbing. A month ago he checked under the hood and forgot to tighten the radiator cap - lost gallon of concentrated Prestone. Lost another on this fracas. Now it's finger tight alternator bolts. His --- is -----.

I had a serp belt half break some years ago. I spent 2 hours on my back under the RV with tools untangling the remains of half the belt (half remained in place) Continued on to destination, called ahead and made an appointment with a Truck shop.. Pulled onto their lube bay and 30 minutes and 80 dollars later the belt was brand new. They only charged me 1/2 hour labor as it did not even take 'em 30 minutes (that included time for paperwork)

Pays to hire a man who knows his job.

Hah! Stress Test! If I don't open my eyes in the morning and see flames it means my heart is in better shape than I thought it was. To be blunt, I had to troubleshoot a snarled snapped and twisted wire harness and make the fan work again. I sort of amazed myself. The diagnostics were performed in shaking anger. I cannot believe the outrageous prices OH-REALLY auto parts wants for garbage grade gear. "Oh we gots a serpentine belt, economy grade for 32 bucks plus tax. Harbor Freight grade tools at 500% markup. Rock Auto wants seven bucks for a Gates Green Stripe belt.

I. Am. Going. To. Purchase. Beer. Guzzling. Gabriel. A Quart. Of Tecate. Beer. And lace. it. with. a pint. pf kickass. habanero. chili. It'll remove his lips.
