Hello, We are in very hot South Texas and we plug into a large company Generator for most of the day but in the afternoon our 30 am plug in shore line, will not run both air while plugged into that Generator. plug and cord over heats.
So we will unplug and turn on our onboard Generator which is an Onan and run it for about 2 to three hrs. to cool down in the hot part of the early evening. Yesterday the Gen died after an hour and my husband check it was low on oil so he took care of that, now the Gen will turn over chug a few times then die. He has check the fuel filter and fuel pump, can see it getting fuel. He has now gone to town to try to figure out what else to try: Any one out there have this problem?
Thanks for any help

I doubt many who own an on board generator have ever considered trading it in for a portable. Most issues are a result of lack of use and Onan's tend to last forever with nominal maintenance - common problem tends to be associated with not using them enough. As far as finding someone to fix .. same guys who work on portables can fix an on board and any truck outfit will have someone experienced with generators (all the refrigerated trucks have generators).

Not familiar with your setup - have read some threads where people just disconnect wire to sensor and ground it - might be worth a shot.

Peg, Did you get a service manual for your specific genset? If you did, it should contain a description of how the sensor works, and a wiring diagram showing how it connects. Armed with that information, you should be able to bypass it. IF, of course, that spec code has one...

No real familiar with this model. Does it have a belt that drives the generator end? If so, check the belt for damage

To over ride it. Just grab the throttle rod and put it to about half way. But if you found one line cracked. I would check the line all the way back to the tank. Best advice is stop throwing money at it. Just stop and think. Some times things will come to you that you forgot. If you do have fuel up to the carb. Then you have a carb problem most likely. Trash under the needle valve.

Changed spark plugs put on new fuel line it was cracked, will try the override tomorrow hubby in bed at 7 up at 4 am. I work night shift. How do you override it ?

Have you tried a fresh set of spark plugs?

If it tries to start it is getting fuel and getting ignition, just not enough of or too much of one or the other, first guess would be fuel. Very doubtful it would be the controller.

If you can observe the throttle/governor linkage, does it move when trying to start? Try over riding it when trying to start it, don't allow the engine to overspeed/run too fast.

Gunny After it died the oil was low not sure if that is what caused it or not, my husband had just changed the oil about 2 weeks before not sure why it was low. Level was almost at bottom of add oil line, when it died. No smoke when chugging. Now it just turns over on chugging, will not start. Hubby sprayed the carb. could not get it off so he stopped trying afraid of something breaking. But he sprayed with Carb. cleaner along with everything else. Now I am wondering if maybe it could be what I read about a controller ?
There is one behind the start button on the Gen itself. ? We are running out of stuff to check. ?

Did it shut down on low oil pressure or did you find the oil level low after it shut down?

As it is trying to start, can safely assume it is getting fuel and ignition.

Does it crank slower than usual or make any unusual noises?

When "chugging" does it smoke a lot? What color smoke?
