Poor design medicine cabinet - anybody upgrade?

In my new to me TT I just bought, it has a medicine cabinet on the bathroom wall. One of those cheap tin things with a mirror door.

Never gave it much thought until I opened the thing for the 4th time and had yet another avalanche of stuff all over the bathroom floor. And of course it is right above the toilet so I have to retrieve stuff from behind there...:M

This thing is a piece of junk!! I hate it! There is nothing to stop things from falling out when you open the door. The one in my old TT was way better. It had little cross pieces at the bottom to prevent things from falling out. Everything got tossed while driving but at least it seldom ever fell out.

So, has anyone upgraded their medicine cabinet to something functional for an RV?

Anybody got any great ideas for replacement?

I'm going to rip this thing off the wall and launch it into the nearest garbage bin!!!! OK, I won't rip it off, I will take the screws out! :B

As you just admitted even a higher quality cabinet you still will have to have the same modifications to prevent things from falling out as the one you say is not suitable for RV use.

I also looked closer at your pic and that bottom shelf with the stuff stacked haphazardly with bottles on top of bottles will need more attention than just a different cabinet or a simple lip which BTW won't keep taller items from leaning against the door and then falling out when the door is opened.

Quite a few others have given you the actual solutions they have successfully used and I bet you will end up using something similar even with your replacement cabinet to really solve the issues you mentioned.

But the fact remains that this cabinet is garbage and not worth retaining. It is simply just a very poor design and it is ugly.

The reason the stuff is stacked haphazardly is because I got tired of neatly arranging it, only to find it everywhere and to have half of it tumble out when I opened the door. I got to the point where I just threw it back in because this poor design cabinet won't work properly.

I never had this issue with my old TT with a wood cabinet and small strips of wood at the bottom.

As I mentioned when I posted this, the old cabinet is going in the trash and I am looking for ideas on a better replacement.
I am not going to jury rig some makeshift thing with a cabinet that is going in the garbage.

This cabinet is going to be removed, scrapped and replaced with a matching wood one. The cabinet is simply not suitable for RV use.

If I can find a wood one somewhere I can buy strips of oak or whatever and fasten them along the bottom to make a barricade to prevent stuff from falling out.

I am one of those people who will get rid of an offending item and replace it with something functional. I have never been one to Mickey Mouse something just to get by with it. Hooks and rubber bands isn't going to happen, but I appreciate the suggestion! I have always been that way!:)

We have a matching wooden one in the MH but still had the same problem. Had some left over venetian blind slats from a blind install in the S&B that almost matched. Glued them across the bottom edge and the sides of each shelf, Problem solved and they were thin enough that they did not interfere with closing the cabinet door.

I knew ours was junk but I put some of the rubbery stuff you put on shelves to keep things from sliding. $1 at Dollar Tree. I did not really think it would work but I had some leftover pieces. I do not keep heavy bottles on those shelves but it holds toothpaste, lipstick, razors, other makeup, a can with toothbrushes in and deoderant. My husband knows it will not work and does not keep any of his things in it.
I keep thinking I should find something better but have not had to.

I just bought a bunch of those to use in my overhead cabinets. My old TT had them and they worked great.
Like you say, put the lip up and it works good.
My new TT has tall overheads with a lot of wasted space without a middle shelf.

We had the same cabinet in our old trailer and learned to live with it. We would just open it VERY SLOWLY after arriving and stand everything back up. Never gave us much of a problem.

I would buy some narrow plastic desk-organizing trays and fix them to each shelf.

There are adjustable brackets to prevent this.At least it sounds like you had the toilet lid closed.

I agree and those along with the rubber shelf liner will solve all your issues.

How about these with a little bungee cord across from side to side? Just KISS thought. They are at Harbor Freight and other places. Strong magnets.

Currently RV-less but not done yet.

so everybody is saying that lowes/home depot have home style medicine cabinets that have raised front edges or other provision to avoid stuff falling off the shelves? Now they do have better looking ones, but these are NOT designed for mobile vehicle use.

Try Home Depot or Lowes, we did in a former TT. Replaced over sink and added one above the toilet.

My TT came with a cheap plastic medicine cabinet in it. I stopped at Menards a mile away from the dealer and picked up an oak one that was on sale that matched the rest of the cabinets. That was the first of many mods. 12 years later I still do several new things each year.
